Hello,

I was having an issue where the AP would not install the image from the WLC (AP image version 17.6.4.56 backup 8.10.183.0, Controller 17.12.5.41)

It kept failing with the below errors after a sftp or tftp download (I tried many different .tar files, same errors):

upgrade.sh: btldr update failed: md5sum mismatch

upgrade.sh: Cleanup for do_upgrade...

upgrade.sh: /tmp/upgrade_in_progress cleaned

upgrade.sh: Cleanup tmp files ... 

Failed to update flash

Image transfer failed

Well... one thing led to another, and I ended up deleting both partitions from BTLDR with the ubi remove <volume> command.

Needless to say, it won't boot past BTLDR now and when I use tftpboot and then bootipq, it just fails with:

Also, for some reason "flash" commands don't work. It gives error: "Unknown command 'mmc'"

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That worked! The AP is booting with the new image. However, now it's not sending WLC Discover messages. Do you know how to enable this? I tried pointing it to the correct controlling using "capwap ap primary-base <wlc>"

@Mark Elsen Unfortunately, I can't even get a network connection. I've tried setting the IP information manually via bootloader and AP CLI but no luck. This only happened after I re-imaged the device. Also, I tried "ap-type capwap" with no luck.

You now have 8.10.130,0 installed.
Before you do anything else you need to upgrade that to 8.10.196.0 from TFTP using the image from:
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286323627/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JK11
Because the old 8.10.130.0 will not understand the CAPWAP protocol from the 17.12.5 WLC whereas 8.10.196.0 will.
That also allows direct upgrade to 17.12 as per https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/9800/17-12/release-notes/rn-17-12-9800.html#Cisco_Concept.dita_59a2987f-2633-4630-8c7b-a8e8aecdeaf7

@Rich R Yes, I installed 8.10.130 via TFTP using the image from that page.

However, now the device will not get a network connection at all even though it did prior, so now I can't use TFTP.

Now I'm trying to install ap1g6a-k9w8-tar.153-3.JK11.tar via fatload using usb (exact command: fatload usb 0:1 0x84000000 ap1g6a-k9w8-tar.153-3.JK11.tar)

It's able to successfully read the file and then a do a reset but it continues to boot from partition 2.

Output of "show version":

Not sure what I'm missing. Am I booting incorrectly?

You can only install the software when running the software.
Is that fatload from u-boot?
If so - it will not work - it has to be from running AP software using archive command which means you will need network working.
You'll have to troubleshoot that and if all else fails then RMA the AP.

I "bricked" my C9130AXI AP using this method and would not reccommend it. My AP boots and hangs at " Chip did not sync. BLE device absent or not compatible" as well. The C9130AXI uses BTLDR and not U-Boot, btw. Fortunately I found another way to upgarde our other 9130's by using the archive command to install the ap1g6a-k9w8-tar.17_17_0_87.tar image which then allowed the AP to join our C9800 controller and then upgrade it to v17.18.1.8. Perhaps there's another image available to "unbrick" it but until then it's going on the shelf.
