Looking at making some hardware upgrades to our current set up with WLC and AP's. Do people usually do a rip and replace method or add in the upgraded WLC, AP's and have two systems going at once. What would be good upgrades to the below equipment and would the set up be similar. We have switches, network equipment connected to client AP's. If there are similar questions already answered in other forum posts, then feel free to direct me to them. Thanks in advance

WLC - Cisco 5508 - Firmware 8.5.12.182

Lightweight AP - 1552E, 1572E

Client/Autonomous AP - 1602E

hi @Cap-24 , good question as this is common problem for many engineers. your AP models and WLC are EOL. so there will be no compatible solution with new APs or WLC versions. my suggestion is to deploy new models (you have many new solutions in meraki or catalyst models ).

1. do the wireless survey to understand required AP count with most suitable models, and suitable WLC (or cloud manage for meraki)

2. check your switches are capable to provide the required power to new APs.

3. select correct wireless solution matching to the business

this matrix will help you to understand the current device compatibility https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html

Agree with Kasun, APs have come a long way so make sure to assess your POE budget, switch port capacity and cabling infrastructure. Ideally you want UPOE with mGig and Cat6A or better cabling, it may sound a bit overwhelming, but you can't just upgrade WiFi without addressing supporting wired infrastructure.

Describe how the 1552/1572 are deployed because 1552 and 1572 have no natural replacement. The EOS/EOL says the replacement of the 1552/1572 is the 1560 and the direct replacement of the 1560 is the 9124, I do not firmly believe 9124 is the real replacement of the 1552/1572, particularly, "on the wire" scenario.

Catalyst 9166D1 is not suitable for outdoor use.

There are many options to update 1600 and the deciding factor is the budget.

The 9800L (not to be confused with the 9800-L series), 9800-M, 9800-H1/H2 are the latest generation of WLC. And if picking the -40/-80, -M, -H1/H2, read Cisco Catalyst 9800 Series Configuration Best Practices very, very well. Read between the lines. I would, for instance, distance from the "80% rule". When it comes to the -40/-80, -M, -H1/H2, it is best to follow the "50% rule" instead:

Do not put more than 50% APs in the same WLC. For instance, if the 9800 can support up to 1k AP (without Performance License), put 490 (or less) APs.

Do not put more than 50% daily client in the same WLC. For instance, if the 9800 can support up to 10k clients, keep the daily client count to <5k.

Recently, I have migrated from 55XX WLC and 85XX WLC to the new Cat 9800

To replace 55XX WLC with i suggest Cat 9800-M decent mid-size (but if you're looking to grow, then look at the higher model, depending on business requirement)

https://www.cisco.com/site/uk/en/products/networking/wireless/wireless-lan-controllers/catalyst-9800-series/index.html

5508: You mapped a WLAN to a VLAN interface.

9800: You use Policy Tags, Site Tags, and RF Tags. It is more powerful but has a steeper learning curve. Cisco provides a Cisco 9800 Best Practices Guide specifically for this transition

Check some presentations for reference :
