Cisco APs not following Firmware scheduled Upgrades MR 30.7.1 > 32.1.6

Hi all,

I am seeing unexpected behaviour following a scheduled firmware upgrade for our wireless network.

Last Friday, I scheduled a firmware upgrade for our Meraki MR access points to MR 32.1.6 (recommended release). The upgrade appears to have completed successfully in the dashboard, and the Network-wide → Firmware upgrades page shows the change as applied.

However, when reviewing the access points:

All MR APs are still reporting MR 30.7.1 as the running firmware.

Each AP individually reports:

Firmware status: Up to date

Current version: MR 30.7.1

The Most recent changes section shows the network being upgraded to MR 32.1.6

The Latest software versions page confirms MR 32.1.6 is the recommended release for access points.

There are no visible errors, upgrade failures, or rollback messages in the dashboard, and the APs are online and operating normally. From the dashboard’s perspective, the upgrade appears to have succeeded, but the devices themselves have not actually moved off MR 30.7.1.

Expected behaviour:
After the scheduled upgrade, all MR access points should be running MR 32.1.6.

Actual behaviour:
All MR access points remain on MR 30.7.1 and report that this version is “up to date”.

Additional details:

Device type: MR access points

Number of APs affected: All APs in the network

Upgrade method: Scheduled via dashboard

Time since upgrade: ~3 days

Screenshots attached showing:

Firmware upgrade history

Recommended MR version (32.1.6)

AP list showing MR 30.7.1

Individual AP details showing MR 30.7.1 as current and up to date.

Could you please advise why the dashboard indicates the upgrade was successful while the APs remain on the previous firmware, and confirm whether the upgrade actually applied or is stuck in an incomplete state?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Arthur Kroth

@akroth the one CRITICAL detail you did not mention anywhere was what model the APs are?

Did you read the release notes for 32.1.6 (there's always a link associated with the version number on the dashboard) and the firmware FAQ:
https://documentation.meraki.com/Wireless/Product_Information/Compatibility_and_Firmware/Cisco_Meraki_MR_Firmware_Restrictions_Overview_and_FAQ

Crucially:
"Cisco Meraki will limit the firmware for certain MR access points to MR30.x to ensure quality and stability. These devices cannot upgrade to MR31.1.x or higher."

So even though you select 32.1.6 the APs will only be updated to the latest 30.x release which is probably what has happened here. How the dashboard displays this is sadly lacking in my opinion but once you know your APs cannot run the latest firmware you understand what you're seeing and it's a reminder that due to EOL you should be reviewing your installed AP hardware because it's not being updated anymore <wink>

The last release note I can see which specifically mentions these APs is for 31.1.8:

"Access points software versions MR 31.1.8 changelog

Important note

Wi-Fi 5 Wave 2 MRs support - This version and subsequent MR 31.x.x are only supported on 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) and newer MR models. 802.11ac Wave 2 and older products will upgrade to the backup version (MR 30.7.1) if they are in networks configured for MR 31.x.x versions, and thus, the new features will not be available. The bug fixes listed below will also not apply to Wi-Fi 5 Wave 2 and older MRs. (https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/Other_Topics/Cisco_Meraki_MR_Firmware_Restrictions_Overview_and_FAQ)"

This is most likely the issue. The AP is too old to support the newer firmware versions.

You can see if your devices have gone EOL here:

https://documentation.meraki.com/Platform_Management/Product_Information/End-of-Life_Notices/Meraki_End-of-Life_(EOL)_Products_and_Dates
