Command to reboot both WLCs at same time in HA setup.

Hi Guys,

We have planned FUS and Aire OS up-gradation for the WLCs which are in HA environment.

Ideal practice is to reboot both the WLCs simultaneously at the same time after FUS or Aire OS upgrade.

Can someone please help me with the command to be enter on Active WLC to reboot both the controllers at same time.

Command: reset system force

CLI Command: reset system force

GUI: Command > Reboot > Reboot

In SSO, the command is:

I prefer not to use the forced switch. Options are:

reset system self

reset system peer

You can also schedule your reboot using the at or in switch.

In SSO mode for after uploading FUS code we have to reboot both the WLCs using " reset system both " command

After upgrading Aire OS code also we have to reboot both controllers with same command or we have to first reboot standby WLC with " reset peer-system " command and then active WLC with " reset system " command.

Reboot BOTH together. Use the command "reset system force" because this instructs both the primary controller and the secondary controller to reboot at the same time. The "force" means that the controllers will both reboot whether or not AP(s) are still downloading firmware. Otherwise, "reset system" or "reset system both" are also applicable.

The complete instruction on how to upgrade the controllers, HA or not, are detailed in the Release Notes (if anyone takes the time to read it).

Completed FUS and Aire OS up-gradation successfully !!

Used "reset system both" to reload both WLCs after FUS upgrade and then used "reset system peer" and "reset system self" after Aire OS upgrade to reboot active and standby WLC one after another !!

in Reset the system after a specified delay.

cancel Cancel a scheduled reset.

forced Reboot the controller forcefully.

notify-time Configures trap generation prior to scheduled resets.

Make sure to check "show sys info" after they reboot and get back into HA state. I've done clustered FUS upgrades and sometimes the second one doesn't take, FUS takes a good long while, around 28 minutes as I recall. Its generally recommended to break SSO first, but I have done it while paired in HA successfully.

Rebooting them at the same time is recommended because of the 2 minute countdown timer (default setting). If they don't see each other within that window, one of them will come up in maintenance mode and shut its physical ports down, you'd have to reach it over console to bring those back up or reboot again.
