Reference:

************************

** Data Rate 'Mandatory' implies that clients who do not support that specific rate will not be able to associate. Data Rate 'Supported' implies that any associated client that also supports that same rate may communicate with the AP using that rate. But it is not required that a client be able to use the rates marked supported in order to associate.

The actual data rates that are supported depend on the channel selected as different channels may have different bandwidths. The reason is that we show data rates and allow the user to select the data rates. But in reality, the AP will pick the next lower data rate allowed for that channel if the chosen data rate is not supported.

************************

If I set the data rate 11Mbps to Mandatory in the WLC 5508, will this disallow 802.11g client rates since 11 is not a "g" data rate? The goal is to support b & g, but mostly g eliminating the lower b rates. 1, 2, and 5.5 are not supported 6 and 9 are supported. I'm just not sure if setting 11 as "Mandatory" will disallow the g client data rates. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

Data rates. I always enjoy these these exchanges.

1) If you turn off the lower data rates you need to make sure your design supports it. Example, if you have a poor rf areas today and clients connect at 5.5 PHY rate in these araes, when you turn 5.5 off these client will break.

2) The lowest mandatory rate you set the APs will send their management and control frames at this data rate. So broadcast will be sent out at 11, if 11 is mandatory.

3) Multicast is sent out the highest mandatory rate. If you have 11 and 24 set to mandatory, multicast will be sent out at 24 PHY. Same rules apply. You need to make sure your client can connect at 24 PHY everywhere if you want them to get the multicast address.

802.11b is 1,2, 5,5 and 11

802.11g is 6,9,12,18,24,36,48,54

If you turn everything off and leave 11 and 802.11g mandatory. Then 802.11b clients will ONLY connect at 11, nothing else. 802.11g devices will connect at 11 and all 802.11g rates.

Does this help ?

What are you trying to achive ?

__________________________________________________________________________________________
"Satisfaction does not come from knowing the solution, it comes from knowing why." - Rosalind Franklin
__________________________________________________________________________________________
‎"I'm in a serious relationship with my Wi-Fi.
