topic Pre-authentication in Wireless

Can some body explain how the pre-authentication works? Let us I am connected to AP1 using Static WEP encryption. At the same time I see AP2(its signal strength is weak compared to AP1) to facilitate roaming. Will my laptop send authentication request to AP2 before it comes under its coverage area OR this pre-authentication stuff works only if I am using WPA?

TIA

Roaming works no matter what encryption you are using. I'm not sure why you define this as "pre-authentication".

Roaming is a client decision, so some cards will perform better than others.
