Conversion of Cisco Aironet series 1231G with RM21A module to Lwapp

hey folks,

i was wondering whether we can convert the following combo from ios to lwapp.....

1231G with RM21A radio module works fine in autonomous....

Will it work if the same 1231G with RM21A radio module converted to lwapp?

12.3(8)JA2 is IOS software release version the autnomous mode runs....

gone thru the below link.. but its not convincing..

yes.. the AP can be converted to LWAPP.. and the method which you can go for is the simplest on earth..

archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite tftp:///

haha archive download... command doesnt require any tool.. just needs the conectivity to the server.. and the tool.. yes it has worked for most of my customers while delaing with TAC cases..

But archive download is the easiest..

Yes. I agree about the command.

But its not re-commended to use when we are converting a IOS series ap to Lwapp for the first time.

Anyhow thats not my concern..

Asking again, did you ever tried and got succussfully converting a 1231G ( 2.4 Ghz radio ) ap with RM21A radio module inserted to Lwapp...

it is recommended.. i do it almost thrice a week on the customer ntwork when ever i handle the TAC case point to this issue.. but only issue is with SSC some times.. nad regarding the Tool.. yes i have worked on it and i was successful

Ok fine. lets do not bother bout the tool or the command....

even we do converted many ios series aps to lwapp either by that command or tool...

but seems like there is a limitation in converting 1231G ( modular access point ios series with explicit RM21A module inserted ) to lwapp...

so just wanted to confirm...

seems like customer not able to convert it successfully and see ap reboots.. but if that RM21A module was removed.. conversion goes fine and everything goes well....

ok.. before upgrading the Radio module was the AP upgraded to the new software or after inserting the radio module??

Customer is using 1231G ( 2.4 ghz ) single radio ap in autonomous mode and it's running well without any issues....

Customer has then inserted RM21A ( 802.11 a) radio module into the card bus of the ap and made 1231G as daul radio ap ( 2.4ghz and 5.0 ghz )... everything done in autonomous mode.. it's running well with no issues...

after upgrading to lwapp.... ap reboots often...

without RM21A.. upgrade to lwapp was fine...

i was checking one of the case which i handled... we used the tool first but faced the same issue.. then tried with cli and it worked.... but later came to know that the modular ones does not work in this way when we use the tool.. tool needs either G or Either A not both... but CLI worked..

Sure... i found a strange thing... that might be the clue here...

in the show tech of that ap with RM21A inserted.... see below...

carrier set is unknown.. i guess this could be the issue..

anyhow let me know your thoughts as well...

fyi... the customer using aps are in -E domain...

case number i cannot pass it on.. its a internal stuff.. only the customer and i can see it.. to clarify ur doubt.. when i used tool to convert the modular radio module which had both G radio and A-radio.. the conversion went well but the AP kept rebooting.. so we consoled into the Ap and tried archive download,.... after which the AP did not relead at all.. and it joined the WLC as well with some SSC issues..

so to resolve this... we need to use archive download command..

is that correct?

also did you get any tracebacks in the ap when it is rebooting often...

nope.. we i did not see any tracbacks.. ok.. if ur are getting the tracebacks.. then its AP crashing.. not just rebooting.. open up a tac case for if the customers Aps are generating tracebacks..
