In researching the Cisco 802.11a products, I have seen the mention of the Aironet 1200 series which features an access point for thoroughput up to 54megabits per second for users within a building. Does Cisco offer an 802.11a bridge yet for intra building connectivity with these same speeds?

A few manufacturers have promised 802.1a brides, but when you detemine the maximum distance allowed by .11a's power restrictions, those 'bridges' will likely only make it across the street - and at a much lower data rate than 54Mbps!

They can claim anything - but they can't break the laws of physics.

Matthew Wheeler

Chief Wireless Architect

www.BlueModal.com

Cisco announced about 802.11a features for 1200 series in August 2002, today we have 16-th.. we strongly waitin'!

I was tested 1200 AP's with 802.11b radio cards and 3338 bridge antennas, tried to insert Intel 5000 802.11a PC cards to 1200 AP, but doesn't work. Has Cisco answer about non-compatibility with Intel hardware.

The 5.15-5.35GHz UNII space (802.11a) has a low power limit that makes it unsuitable for use as a bridge between two locations.

5.8GHz works very well for that purpose, however Cisco does not currently have a product in that frequency range.

Matthew Wheeler

Chief Wireless Architect

www.BlueModal.com
