This AP model does not support autonomous mode.

It can operate in Mobility Express mode similar to autonomous (in fact AP act as a WLC addition to ap function in that case)

Why can't you use the console, SSH, Telnet, Web?
The AP currently only has the CAPWAP image installed, this can't be switched to ME without installing the ME image first. So you do require an SSH connection (or Telnet). I think you can boot the AP on the LAN in a network with active DHCP. Then you have to figure out it's IP address and you should be able to SSH to it.

You understand this correct. As far as I know you can't convert a lightweight (capwap) AP to ME through the button press. Only the other way around is possible.
I'm currently not sure what causes the error you see, might be a licensing issue. Can you try the following command on the WLC:
"license add ap-count <NUMBER BETWEEN 1 AND 10>"

I'm not entirely sure, it could also be the "normal" output, regardless if a device is connected or not. I don't anymore have an old WLC to check, as mine are RTU licensing based. Sorry can't help you any further here.

Did you reboot the controller after enabling the evaluation licenses ?

Can you run these to commands

>show license evaluation

>show license summary
