As long as'Vlan base Central Switching' isn't checked, there's no way that they would ever be centrally switched.

There's no problem creating a null interface if you feel more comfortable with that but there's no real need, you could just use an existing interface (we use the management interface).

Flexconnect WLAN Interface Mapping

Hi all,

I am deploying an 8500 WLC for a very large scale Flexconnect network. In fact, every AP will advertise Flexconnect locally switched WLANs only. Can I (and should I) map all WLANs to a 'null' interface which does not exist in data centre network if I don't forsee any local mode APs being deployed on this WLC?

Regards

Brett

You can't map a null

You can't map a null interface and you don't need to, all you need to do is uncheck 'Vlan based Central Switching' if you're not going to have any centrally switched traffic.

If this check box is ticked and in a radius server response you send a vlan that doesn't exist on the AP the client will be centrally switched using the interface specified in your AP group.

Thanks Martin,

Thanks Martin,

I should have clarified. When I say 'null' I mean I will name an interface 'null' and give it an IP address that does not exist on the network and map each WLAN to that. I was originally thinking the management interface, but I don't want clients to ever be put on the Data Centre management VLAN network in the event of a configuraton mistake of some sort.

I also don't want to have to create 100s if not 1000s of seperate interfaces if these WLCs will never host a local mode AP.

Does my logic make sense?

I've never configured a Flexconnect enabled WLAN without allowing centrally switched/local mode APs. Just trying to understand the config involved.

Thanks again.

Brett
