"Still not blocking Content that it is supposed to block."

Then copy & paste the complete plain text output of the following diagnostic commands here, so that I may see what's up:

 nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com.

 nslookup www.exampleadultsite.com.

"Still no icon at top of page."

Why would you like an icon? What icon?

"How do I run an updater?"

You either configure your router to send IP address information updates to OpenDNS. Or you install and run a software on a computer doing this.
https://opendns.zendesk.com/forums/21224750

I have been using open dns for awhile now with no issues. I realized today it isnt working. I have no symbol at top of my screen. I check the sites to verify and get the blocked screen for phishing, but porn is still accessible. using an airport extreme router. same one I have been using for a while.

I recently loafed adblock plus and an avast antivirus program. could that be messing with opendns?

If you have "Secure DNS" disabled in Avast, then you should be fine. Adblock Plus is irrelevant re DNS.

From your symptoms it looks like you don't have the correct IP address registered for your network at https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/
Repair this manually now by e.g. clicking the green arrows icon, and ensure you run an updater going further.
