It's really hard to say. A second router could be configured to not send out IPv6 traffic, which could be all that's needed. It's also possible the Google is intercepting and redirecting DNS traffic, in which the only option you might have is DNSCrypt.

The only way to know for sure is to test the Google Fiber in your service area.

Now that Google Fiber has went to IPv6 (in Kansas City at least) the content filters no longer work. If IPv4 is still in your area it will work (or at least did for me before the switch to IPv6).

I did try to trick the system by entering an IPv6 equivalent for the IPv4 OpenDNS address. It did not work so don't bother and I had to plug directly into the network box to fix it (it disabled my internet access).

As far as I can tell OpenDNS content filters will not work while using IPv6.

I have not tried a second router.

I just tried to do this since I finally realized I wasn't being filtered after a few months. It works for me. Just setup the router in front of the Google fiber box and it is now filtering just fine. No extra ip settings.

Remember to reboot the router and and your computer before checking. Had to do the same thing for the AT&T Fiber box. Was hoping to only have one piece of network equipment to deal with, but no dice.

Here's what I did for those that need more detail - not a step-by-step but if you have a basic understanding you should be able to get this to work - My router is Linksys.

ETHERNET CABLES

Fiber box (at wall) to Google Fiber Network Box - internet port (yellow)

GFNB (black ports - any one of the four) to your router's internet port (mine is yellow)

ROUTER AND NETWORK BOX

Your router cannot be in Bridge Mode

It helps to have a Gigabit router but it is not required (you will lose 90% of your speed though)

Give your router a static IP on your network - mine always has as has my wireless printer (e.g. 192.168.1.100)

My GFNB has a static IP also (e.g. 192.168.1.1)

Enable Wifi on your router and disable it on the GFNB

In your router settings: disable IPv6, Connection Type = Static IP, Internet IPv4 address is your routers static IP, Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway is your GFNB static IP address, DNS 1 is 208.67.222.123, DNS 2 is 208.67.220.123. Both are the OpenDNS family shield addresses.

Reboot router

I could only get the Family Shield address to work. HTH
