...
Error 1460: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
Conditions:
This issue can occur for different reasons.
1. Windows registry corruption due to Microsoft bug in 1607,1703, and 1709
2. TrendMicro self protection blocking access to registry keys during AnyConnect upgrade
3. CheckPoint Endpoint protection blocking AnyConnect upgrades
Workaround:
**** IMPORTANT UPDATE - 3/8/18 ****
Microsoft has released a tool that will fix corrupted PC's. Before running this tool please first make sure you are not hitting this issue due to CheckPoint EndPoint Protection or TrendMicro causing the issue (see below). Once you have ruled out Trend and CheckPoint follow the below steps to fix the broken machines.
Follow these steps to use the tool.
1. Uninstall NAM from the problematic machine.
2. From an admin command prompt run the following "PurgeNotifyObjects.exe -confirmdelete"
3. Attempt to install the NAM module again
Please note that the tool cleans up Windows, and works regardless of the version of AnyConnect - in other words, any version including the current 4.5 MR4.
This issue has also been seen to be caused by CheckPoint and Trend Micro OfficeScan products, also including Trend Micro Worry-Free Business software. Both vendors have updates available to resolve the issue. If customers have either of these products installed they should contact the vendor to ensure the version they are running has the fix.
Trend Micro Fix information
Trend Micro(TM) OfficeScan 11.0 SP1 Patch
Hotfix - Server Build 6447 and Agent Build 6211
CheckPoint Fix:
Version 81.4.0.6520
The issue is not caused from anything associated with AnyConnect, but rather due to the driver installer changes from Microsoft's end. Additionally, Microsoft's recommendation is not to have any pending software updates before proceeding to Windows 10 upgrades.
