Its all depends on use case - personally i look this way : (this may have different opinion on different views. - what works for you is important based on the use case as mentioned.
High level -
Most of the DCI Layer 2 extention i will use OTV - when you stretching the Layer 2.
VXLAN i use internal VLAN Mobility in the SAME DC or across Enterprise camput.
high level you can view here with comparet :

This is an old and long discussion: what to use for DCI - OTV or VXLAN Multi-Site. And yes, I mentioned VXLAN Multi-Site, because in my opinion, vxlan by itself is not a DCI technology.
Anyway, I made a quick table comparing the two. The table is definitely not complete, but other community members can add to it.
OTV | VXLAN Multi-Site | |
Packet Encapsulation Mode | Ethernet over MPLS over GRE over IP (For M2/F2e) Ethernet over UDP-IP (over VXLAN for M3/F3) |
Ethernet over UDP-IP (MAC-in-UDP) |
Supporting Devices | Nexus 7000 (anounced EoL, March 2021) / Nexus 7700 (not yet EoL) |
Nexus 9000 |
Number of Sites Supported | 12 | 25 |
Overhead | 42 Bytes | 50 Bytes (54 Bytes if original 802.1q header is preserved) |
Underlay | Dark Fiber/DWDM/IP | Dark Fiber/DWDM/IP |
Control Plane | ISIS | BGP EVPN |
Loop Prevention | yes | yes |
Fault Containment | yes | yes |
Inter-site Multi-Homing | yes | yes |
Path Optimization (EW) | FHRP Isolation | Distributed Anycast Gateway |
Path Optimization (NS) | LISP w/ LAN ext. | Preferred AS-Path, Advertising Host routes |
Site L2 Isolation | Yes | Yes |
Required devices | Only OTV VDC for encapsulation | VTEPs and Border Gateways |
MAC mobility | Yes | Yes |
Configuration complexity | Not complex | Relativly complex |
DCNM support | Yes | Yes (recommended for multi-site) |
Hope it helps,
Sergiu
