ACI Static Binding VXLAN

Hello all,

I fail to understand why you would use VXLAN-Encapsulation for a static binding in ACI:

All design guides I see utilize VLAN-TAGs for EPG Classification on Server-Ports. You can however create VXLAN-Pools and use VXLAN-TAGs to map Packets to EPGs. When would you do this? Is there a practical example? I could image running some kind of VXLAN overlay ON TOP of ACI (for example Docker with VXLAN?) and then try to enforce policy on these packets by classifying Overlay VXLAN-IDs to EPGs.

Has anyone seen a real life deployment using vxlan encapsulation on server-ports?

Hi @ThiloS

Most of the hypervisors today support VXLAN. So one may chooses to run vxlan in all DC environment, starting and terminating on the servers. In this case you will map the vxlan to an EPG. Note that ACI supports encapsulation of VLAN, VXLAN, as well as NVGRE:

But since most of environments are still running vlans, it makes sense to have the examples showing the vlan based encap.

Stay safe,

Sergiu
