why using N55-M160L3-V2 module in nexus ?

 can anyone please explain why using  "N55-M160L3-V2" L3 card in Nexus Switch?

can we do L3 access without using  N55-M160L3-V2 card?

N55-M160L3-V2 is Nexus 5596 Layer 3 Expansion Module, version 2 .N55-M160L3-V2 is compatible only on n5596.
