Field Names: Mobile vs. Full Portal

Kurt Schumacher

The field labels in the mobile access require some updates (plus some additions anyway). What is named on the mobile page as "Name" is in fact the "Description" field (predefined by UPnP).

What is shown in the mobile inventory view (again a different name, it's "Dashboard" on the fat portal), like like the Name (Description), MAC, and IP address are not the most useful ones. This inventory list should be filled with more useful information. The MAC address (and many more serivce information) should be shown in a dedicaged detail view page in my opinion.

A lot of room to enhace the mobile portal, as discussed ... ie. for device remote access.

Howdy Kurt,

The field labels in the mobile access require some updates (plus some additions anyway). What is named on the mobile page as "Name" is in fact the "Description" field (predefined by UPnP).

Can you help us understand this request a little better?  Currently the 'Display Name' in the full portal matches the 'Name' field in the mobile portal (shortened to 'Name' for the mobile view).  The 'Device Description' in the full view isn't shown in the mobile view in the current release - although it will become available in mobile portal the next release.

We'll get this discrepancy in the mobile interface fixed (rename Inventory to Dashboard).  You'll be able to drill down into a device in the mobile portal in the next release and also get a summary of the last 10 events for that device.

A lot of room to enhace the mobile portal, as discussed ... ie. for device remote access.

Absolutely.  You'll see some great new features in the mobile portal in the next release in two weeks, including device remote access, and a topology view (non-flash!)

Thanks Kurt. You are correct. The "Name" in the current version of the mobile portal is actually the "Description". This has been corrected in the latest version of the Mobile portal. The Name field will be the name field and the Description field will be the Description.

>> What is shown in the mobile inventory view (again a different name, it's  "Dashboard" on the fat portal), like like the Name (Description), MAC,  and IP address are not the most useful ones.

As Mike mentioned, the Inventory page in the mobile portal has been renamed Dashboard in the latest version of the mobile portal.

>> This inventory list should be filled with more useful information.

The new customer Dashboard (formerly Inventory) page in the forthcoming release contains the following high level device information: Name (not Description), IP, MAC, Device Icon and Status. We have introduced a new Device Detail screen that can be accessed by selecting a device in this dashboard.

>> A lot of room to enhance the mobile portal, as discussed ... ie. for device remote access.

As Mike also mentions, there are some exciting new features coming to the Mobile version of the portal in the next few weeks, including remote access.

If you find something you wish were different in either portal, please don't hesitate to make a suggestion. We will prioritize the request and make every effort to accommodate it.

Thanks again Kurt!

Mike & Michael,

Excellent news! Just had spotted different labels used in the portal vs. the mobile access for the same data fields, and the really useful stuff (a good host or interface name) was not available on the very early mobile portal yet.

The thing with the "Name": What can be discovered from each device is typically limited as not available on all network devices. Thus, I raised the suggestion to make use of DNS reverse lookup in an attempt to distinguish a better and centrally managed unique name. This becomes more critical, as soon as we will detect devices over multiple WLAN, so for example the same router will become visible represented by different interfaces, IP addresses,

Feel free to ask if something is unclear, I'm often progressing too fast ....
