ODL Boron and usage of initial configfile xml

I'm having this error:

Caused by: org.opendaylight.controller.config.api.ValidationException: {isco-controller-main-impl={mycontroller-main-impl=Found module factory does not expose expected service interface. Can anyone confirm that Boron version does not support initial configfile anymore? If not, is there any up-to-date tutorial/documentation about injecting config subsystem services using initial config?

Can you provide some additional context as to what is happening when this error is encountered? For example, is this when first starting a clean version of ODL?
