Adding an existing Cisco 5520 WLC to DNAC

Hi all,

My company has an existing Cisco 5520 WLC in production. We just got DNAC for testing. I am looking into adding it into DNAC so we can have heat maps etc. I think I'll have to use OTT method since we do not having any SDA setup yet. My question is can I have DNAC pull the configs from the Cisco 5520? Or do I have to build out the policy in DNAC? I don't have physical access to the equipment so I am hesitant to "wipe" the Cisco 5520 and push a DNAC config.

Thanks!

Yes, there is a "Learn Device Config" option in inventory.  Try this and let us know how it goes:

You don't need to worry about OTT vs Fabric, since you don't have an underlay.  Cisco DNA can simply manage your WLCs, and monitor the APs that those WLC control.

If you want to learn more about the product, try attending some Ask The Experts webinars:

And ask your sales team to put you in touch with your Customer Success representatives who can hep get you started on all the Cisco DNA features.

This video explains how Cisco DNA Center can learn device configurations from AireOS and 9800 WLCs and manage Brownfield WLCs.

Thank you Preston, I was able to get the WLC into Cisco DNAC. Do you know if I need to allow the Cisco access points direct access to DNA Center? Currently they are only allowed to talk to the WLC over the CAPWAP ports. The access points show under compliance N/A in DNAC. Not sure if that is normal or not.

Thanks!

First you need to visit the link below and figure out which version you need to be. Depending on yout DNAC version will be your 5520 version

https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/Website/enterprise/dnac_compatibility_matrix/index.html

Once you fix the versions, you need to add the WLC on assurance mode. There will be no OTT as you dont have fabric yet. OTT works for those who has fabric but want to let the WLC out.

In your case, you need only Assurance.

To add the WLC you need to discovery it or add manually using SNMP and CLI credentials.  Consult some doc in order to do that. The process it quite simples.

After WLC discovery you need to add it to a site  and floor.  After that, you will be able to get heat maps.

Dont worry...DNAC will no break your WLC. It will be basically a Cisco Prime with more resources.

Thank you for your response Flavio, I was able to get the system discovered.
