It takes a while. In my lab 1.2.6 to 1.2.8 was 7.5 hours, 2 hours of which was download (very slow Internet connection in my lab) and 2 and a half hours was application upgrade.
If you look at lab notes below and timing, I think the best way to go when coming from 1.2.6 is:
- Apply 1.2.6.1, check in 45 mins later
- Apply 1.2.8, check in 2 hours later
- Download all apps - time will vary depending on Internet speed. If slow, allow 2 hours
- Install all apps, check in 2 and a half hours later
That way, you're not forced to sit there staring at it.
Here are my lab notes. Making sure that Cisco DNA Center is "quiet" after each step is important.

Total time to update Cisco DNA Center 1.2.6 to 1.2.8: 7 and 1/2 hours, 2 hours of which are "slow download"
From 1.2.6, apply System Update 1.1.0.659.1, 40 minutes total.
Cisco DNA Center was busy for 10 minutes after System Update, verified with

Once this showed only "Checking" and "Check Complete", moved on to 1.2.8 via "Switch Now"
Then apply System Update 1.1.0.715, 2 hours 15 minutes total
Cisco DNA Center was busy for 20 minutes after System Update, verified with
while true; echo Checking; do magctl appstack status | grep 0/; echo "Check Complete"; sleep 30; done
Once this showed only "Checking" and "Check Complete", moved on to App Updates
"Download All" for App Updates, took 2 hours because of slow Internet link in lab
"Update All" for App Updates, took 2 and a half hours
