16.9.2 drops into ROMMON.

Hi,

We had a switch that dropped off the network, when we consoled into it we found it had gone into ROMMON mode.

Any ideas anyone.

C9200L-48T-4G      16.9.2            CAT9K_LITE_IOSXE      BUNDLE

 

The only way to get the switch back was to pull the plug.

Any known issues with 16.9.2 ? Did a bug search but didnt find anything.

Just to clarify - Once you Pull the power Plug and Plug it back is that boot normally ?

 

I advise to check :

 

1. Boot variable ( show boot)

2. check any errors before it go down ? Like crash logs you can view with #dir

 

how frequnty it happens ?

 

Not that i am aware of any bug, but if business ok, worth to upgrade to latest verion and observe.

Hi Balaji, 

We had to put the plug to power cycle the switch and it booted correctly loading the config and has worked for the last four days.

However its a bit of a concern and wondered if there are known issues. 

I will check logs later and let you know.

As soon as the device boots the logs go away, it is worth to setup and log server if you like to investigate.

The Logs have no option for switch info. I looked at the logs and it doesnt really show anything relevant as it doesnt go back far enough.

I've got no more "tricks" left.  This is telling me some issued the "reload" command or the switch had a power failure. 

Does the switch have dual power supply or not? 
Is this switch part of a stack or not? 

Final thing, I've read a number of "silent crash" bugs with 16.X.X and a lot of them do not leave any traces.  

I strongly recommend upgrading the firmware because I don't trust 16.9.2.  

16.9.5 just came out.  I recommend someone think about upgrading to this version.

OK thanks for Looking Leo.

I suspected it may come to a dead end but worth a look in case others had the issue.

 

Not part of a stack and not dual power supply.

I think we shall leave it running and see if the problem occurs again. If it does will upgrade. Have checked and the latest is 16.12.3a which is also recommended.

Go straight to 16.12.4.
