Phones and UDPs Showing in "Use my desk phone for calls"

I've seen one other discussion in the past on this and never did see a solution, so I'll throw it out there again.

In both Windows and Mac Jabber clients I notice when hovering over the "Use my desk phone for calls" option that you get the option to select both any physical phones you control in addition to User Device Profiles you control. I never remember seeing this in the past, but I seems any new users I provision end up getting this.

I've tried many times digging through every setting imaginable in the UDP of a user who does and a user who doesn't see theirs show up, but I just can't seem to pinpoint any one setting that will change this behavior.

I can grab a screenshot if what I'm trying to explain isn't obvious, but hopefully it makes sense. Just like if you control multiple physical phones and expect to see them selectable to control through Jabber, we'll also see any UDPs, which obviously fail when selected, in the same list.

Any ideas what's triggering these to show up?

Are you using Extension Mobility?

Yes, each user has a personal phone they have at their desk, but they all also each have a UDP for extension mobility purposes for when they travel to other offices, or for home-based users who occasionally come into the office and use a "hotel" style cube and want to bring their extension down to the phone in the cube.

I have opened a TAC case, will update when/if there's a resolution.

Hi Pdavapark, did you find a solution to this?

I am currently rolling out Jabber to a global network and we are getting stacks of complaints regarding this issue. Users are confused as to which device they are suppose to select.

Why is the UDP showing in the list?

Unfortunately not yet... It's got to be some little checkbox or setting I haven't looked at yet, but haven't tried hunting this down in a while.

Well it appears this may have been fixed in Jabber 11. I just went to try and look into this again and noticed that my extra UDP "phone" was gone from the list of available options to select in Jabber. I then remembered I've been testing Jabber 11 while my users are on 10.6.1.

To confirm, I went over to another machine I just setup a for an incoming new user and confirmed the problem was present; both his physical 8945 and UDP of a 7942 were showing up as phones to select for call control. I upgraded his Jabber client from 10.6.1 to 11.0 and logged back in and there was no longer a list of options of phones to select, and just the plain "Use my phone for calls" option with no extra options.

I just searched through the release notes for Jabber 11 and can't find any mention of this, but the functionality definitely seems to have changed.

OK thanks will also test version 11.

I think if people had logged into Jabber at some stage before their deskphone, the UDP will stay as an option.

I haven't tried actually logging into a phone with the UDP yet, I was curious to see what would happen there. The way we're configured is that each user has their own dedicated desk phone which they don't need to log into, a Jabber CSF device, and a UDP for them to log into hotel cubes when traveling around to other offices.

This ends up with them rarely using their UDPs and usually just having the annoyance of a UDP plus their actual personally assigned desk phone showing up when they go to select a phone to use from Jabber. I'll test tomorrow when back in the office to see what happens with Jabber once logged into a phone with the UDP as far as phone selection goes. For me, where my issue was having the UDP show up all the time when people rarely use their UDPs at all, the new behavior with 11 solves most everything.

Just reporting back with some testing to help answer your question, I just tried the following.

- Logged into Jabber (Was not previously logged into any UDPs).

- Confirmed I had just the default "Use my phone for calls" option was there, with no "extras" from my UDP showing up

- Logged into a 7841 with my UDP and gave Jabber a second - it then expanded my phone options to be my dedicated phone or the one I was logged into with my UDP.

- Logged back out, gave it another minute to adjust, and my list of phones was automatically fixed to remove the one I had just logged out of my UDP
