Reduce presence downtime between network switches

Latest Jabber clients installed Windows and Mac. 10.5 UCM and IM&P. Our users will frequently flip over a VPN while at work. When this is done the jabber presence will go offline for several minutes. 

What I have noticed is that once the VPN is up and established, the Phone, Directory, VM and everything else in the connection status immediately is reconnected. Presence is the only thing that seems to be on some timer. 

I was looking at the Presence timers in IM&P parameters. Not sure if any of these will reduce the time for the client to check back in to resume or update presence. To clarify this isn't presence from user to user. This is on the individual device as its greyed out for a few minutes. If a user is in a conversation with the user connecting the VPN, it will still look like the user's previous presence until a new subscription has. But anyways I am more interested in tuning the downtime the presence and in-turn the chat functionality when this scenario arises.

Anyone have insight or experience?
