Purpose
The purpose of this document is to explain how license activation works on a Cisco ISR-G2 (19xx/29xx/39xx) router. It will detail how to install the license and verify that it has been actived correctly.
The CME/SRST feature is accessible only once the uck9 technology-package license has been accepted and the router has been reloaded. If the uck9 technology-package license is not installed or the router not reloaded, no voice related commands will be accepted by the command line. Once the technology-package license is installed, it gives access to the CME/SRST feature set.
To determine the current status of the technology-package license, check the output of the "show version" command. It will provide the state of the technology packages currently active.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Technology Technology-package Technology-package
Current Type Next reboot
------------------------------------------------------------------
ipbase ipbasek9 Permanent ipbasek9

The above sample output indicates that the router does not have the uck9 technology-package enabled. For this document, we'll enable the evaluation license for the uck9 package using the license boot module c2951 technology-package uck9 command in global configuration mode (config t).
Router(config)#license boot module c2951 technology-package uck9
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING TERMS CAREFULLY. INSTALLING THE LICENSE OR
LICENSE KEY PROVIDED FOR ANY CISCO PRODUCT FEATURE OR USING SUCH
PRODUCT FEATURE CONSTITUTES YOUR FULL ACCEPTANCE OF THE FOLLOWING
TERMS. YOU MUST NOT PROCEED FURTHER IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO BE BOUND
BY ALL THE TERMS SET FORTH HEREIN.
Use of this product feature requires an additional license from Cisco,
together with an additional payment. You may use this product feature
on an evaluation basis, without payment to Cisco, for 60 days. Your use
of the product, including during the 60 day evaluation period, is
subject to the Cisco end user license agreement
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/general/warranty/English/EU1KEN_.html
If you use the product feature beyond the 60 day evaluation period, you
must submit the appropriate payment to Cisco for the license. After the
60 day evaluation period, your use of the product feature will be
governed solely by the Cisco end user license agreement (link above),
together with any supplements relating to such product feature. The
above applies even if the evaluation license is not automatically
terminated and you do not receive any notice of the expiration of the
evaluation period. It is your responsibility to determine when the
evaluation period is complete and you are required to make payment to
Cisco for your use of the product feature beyond the evaluation period.
Your acceptance of this agreement for the software features on one
product shall be deemed your acceptance with respect to all such
software on all Cisco products you purchase which includes the same
software. (The foregoing notwithstanding, you must purchase a license
for each software feature you use past the 60 days evaluation period,
so that if you enable a software feature on 1000 devices, you must
purchase 1000 licenses for use past the 60 day evaluation period.)
Activation of the software command line interface will be evidence of
your acceptance of this agreement.
ACCEPT? [yes/no]: yes
The above End User License Agreement must be accepted and the router reloaded before the license is actived.
Once the router is reloaded, the output of the show version command will reflect the change in status of the uc technology package.

The output now shows "EvalRightToUse" as the type for the uc technology. This indicates that the features associated with the UC technology-package are active but the router is using an evaluation license which will expire.
Steps to install the permanent license can be found in the official documentation.
Cisco’s Integrated Services Routers Generation Two Licensing and Packaging
Once the permanent license is installed, the type will change to RightToUse as depicted in the below output.

With only the uck9 package installed, the cme-srst license is not in an active state. No additional licenses need to be installed on the router. The only step needed is to configure the CME/SRST feature and accept the EULA.
Viewing the output of show license detail cme-srst indicates that there is no configuration present and the EULA has not been accepted.

This section assumes that there is no CME or SRST configuration present on the router but as stated above, the uck9 feature license has been installed. It will cover how to activate the CME/SRST feature license.
Step 1:
Go to global configuration mode. Issue the config t command.
Step 2:
Issue the telephony-service command.
Step 3:
Issue the max-dn <dn> and max-ephone <ephone> commands. Once the last command is entered, you'll be prompted to accept the EULA.

Once the feature has been configured and the EULA accepted, check the status of the license with the show license detail cme-srst command.
The output should show the License State as Active, In Use.

If the output indicates that the EULA has not been accepted, issue the license accept end user agreement command. This will show the EULA and provide the option to accept it.
Note that even after accepting the EULA, the License Type says EvalRightToUse and output shows an Evaluation period. This is because the evaluation is ACTIVE for 60 days. After 60 days i.e. on "Transition date" this will change to RightToUse.
Excellent Doc!!!!!
So what happens after 12 years?
The license expires.
-Felipe
So after 12 years ISR G2 routers will simply stop supporting SRST? There is no way to renew the license?
Are you planning on having an ISR G2 running SRST in 12 years?
I was. I routinely leave Cisco routers in production for decades. I have 1600 series routers still in production. My oldest router running SRST is coming up on 10 years, and I have no plans to replace it within the next decade. 12 years is a very short time.
What you are telling me is Cisco is now putting expiration dates in their routers. This is called planned obsolescence, and I really don't like it. Putting this in SRST is just adding insult to injury. As SRST only kicks in when the WAN goes down, no one will know it has expired until it is needed and it doesn't work.
Pascal,
It seems the licensing structure has been updated and the 12 year limit was temporary.
"Such arrangement basically provided 12-year evaluation licenses and was intended to be a temporary solution until Lifetime RTU support was available. This temporary RTU solution provided immediate relief for customers facing licensing-related overhead. "
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/routers/access/sw_activation/SA_on_ISR.html#wp1158485
As long as the router is running IOS listed in the "Lifetime RTU" section, it won't be limited to 12 years.
-Felipe
That document states "The customer is required to pay for the CME-SRST feature license which is valid for 12 years." So you are saying that is not correct and "the CME-SRST feature license" I "pay for" is actually valid forever, but in some IOS versions the license activation will expire in 12 years, but the license I paid for is still actually valid so all I have to do is make sure the router has an IOS version that supports "Lifetime RTU", I don't have to "pay for" another "CME-SRST feature license" in 12 years? If I am understanding you correctly, please have that documentation fixed. Thank you.

Hi Felipe Garrid and all,
Thanks for your document. But i meet many confuse from your document with my customer device. Please take a look with my logs below:

As my Bold word , i don't know why the license info is mismatch, please help me explain it.
Another confuse, with log below, please help me confirm that cme-srst is activation and how to check user option license for this decvice?

Many thank for your helping. For more info please send email to : trunght@fpt.com.vn
hi,
we received hard copies/cd for CME and SRST licenses but don't find the PAK code.
where do get this info or is it a separate file/folder?
For CCME you dont need PAK code. This is a right to use License. This is what this document is all about...
Starting with Cisco IOS Releases 15.0(1)M6, 15.1(1)T4, 15.1(2)T4, 15.1(3)T2, and 15.1(4)M, Evaluation licenses are replaced with Evaluation Right To Use licenses. Evaluation Right to Use licenses automatically become Right to Use licenses after the initial evaluation period. Follow the steps detailed in this section to activate an Evaluation Right to Use license.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/sw_activation/SA_on_ISR.html#pgfId-1204791
Thank you so much for this document.
Could you please confirm if my understanding is correct?
We purchased C2921-CME-SRST/K9 with 25 licenses for SRST for our client.
The following is result of issuing command "show license detail cme-srst".
tokyo_gwvoice#show license detail cme-srst
Feature: cme-srst Period left: 7 weeks 4 days
Index: 1 Feature: cme-srst Version: 1.0
License Type: EvalRightToUse
License State: Active, In Use
Evaluation total period: 8 weeks 4 days
Evaluation period left: 7 weeks 4 days
Period used: 6 days 20 hours
Transition date: Mar 26 2016 14:52:01
License Count: 25/0 (In-use/Violation)
License Priority: Low
Store Index: 7
Store Name: Built-In License Storage
So after 60 days this "EvalRightToUse" will change into "RightToUse" automatically?
We don't need to do anything in order to activate this SRST function for this router?
IOS version is c2900-universalk9-mz.SPA.153-3.M6.bin.
