After an upgrade to the Cisco CallManager, the "The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master" error message appears intermittently in the Event Viewer

Core Issue

The messages are actually related to Windows OS networking in your environment. They are not caused by Cisco CallManager. After upgrade of the Cisco CallManager, the servers reports these messages because the Anonymous Access setting under Local Security policy is set to be more restrictive for anonymous connections. If the Local Security Policy setting for Anonymous Access setting is 2, it means no access without explict anonymous permissions, which is set incorrectly after the upgrade.

For a workaround to this issue, refer to Cisco bug ID CSCef50900.

You may also choose to prevent the Cisco CallManager servers from becoming browser masters. To prevent the Cisco CallManager servers from becoming browser masters, use Regedit and set the registry key from Auto or Yes to FALSE: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Browser \ Parameters \ MaintainServerList.

To change the registry value, perform these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type regedit.exe and then click OK.
  3. Navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Browser \ Parameters.
  4. In the right pane, double-click the MaintainServerList value to enter edit mode. In the Value Data box, type FALSE.
  5. Close the registry editor.
  6. Restart the computer.

Note: Make a backup of the registry before making any changes. For more information, refer to How To Use the Backup Program to Back Up and Restore the System State in Windows 2000.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 135404 : Multihomed master browser may cause Event ID 8021 and 8032.
