Introduction

This document will explain the bare minimum information for gathering the config file off a Cisco MGCP voice gateway.

I will cover three ways to get the file. The first way is the easiest because it takes the least amount of time, the second way is not as good as the first because you need to save a file on the router, the third option is least desirable because it requires changes on the router and a lot of the parameters in the configuration are marked as unknown.

If you would like to know how to gather phone configuration file you can reference Two Ways to Obtain a Phone's Configuration File from CUCM.

The easiest way

You can also review (or copy then paste to a file) the configuration from a web browser. Follow the steps below to do so.

  • Find one of the ports for the gateway using this link:
  • Remove all of the port information and keep only the device name
  • Add the device name to the end of the link below (include the domain if there is one):
  • Once you receive a new page with an error, right click and view the source.

Example of the easy way

Save the file on router - use if the first method has issues

Get the MGCP name of the router using the command show ccm-manager | i Name then use the command copy tftp flash: to tell the router to download something from the tftp server and save it to flash. When prompted for the IP of the tftp server put in your CUCM tftp server. Then when prompted for the file name provide the router's mgcp name with cnf.xml appended.

Example from lab

rtp12-pkinane-SJ#show ccm-manager | i Name
MGCP Domain Name: rtp12-pkinane-SJ.pkinane.lab
rtp12-pkinane-SJ#copy tftp flash:
Address or name of remote host []? 14.48.38.5
Source filename []? rtp12-pkinane-SJ.pkinane.lab.cnf.xml
Destination filename [rtp12-pkinane-SJ.pkinane.lab.cnf.xml]?
Accessing tftp://14.48.38.5/rtp12-pkinane-SJ.pkinane.lab.cnf.xml...
Loading rtp12-pkinane-SJ.pkinane.lab.cnf.xml from 14.48.38.5 (via FastEthernet0/0.1): !
[OK - 7211 bytes]

7211 bytes copied in 0.612 secs (11783 bytes/sec)

rtp12-pkinane-SJ#more flash:rtp12-pkinane-SJ.pkinane.lab.cnf.xml

Enable logging of the config file - least desirable

The router first needs to have a logging buffer enabled, we want to prevent other debugs from printing to the log in the middle of the configuration file, and we want to enable the single debug for printing the configuration file to the logging buffer. This is done with the commands below. All The commands in this document are entered in global configuration mode. To enter global configuration mode use the command conf t.

service sequence-numbers

service timestamps debug datetime localtime msec

logging buffered 10000000

no logging console

no logging monitor

default logging rate-limit

default logging queue-limit

do u all

do debug ccm-manager config-download xml

For more information on logging you can reference How to configure logging in Cisco IOS.

Force the router to request the configuration

Enter the commands below to force the configuration download.

no ccm-manager config
do clear log
ccm-manager config

Gather the configuration file from the logging buffer

Now the configuration file can be gathered from the logging buffer with the command do show log.

Once you have the configuration file you can use the command do u all to disable the debug.

Example from my lab

rtp12-pkinane-SJ#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z.
rtp12-pkinane-SJ(config)#
rtp12-pkinane-SJ(config)#service sequence-numbers
