Mark began his academic journey in physics, earning a master's degree in 1982. His career in technology took root when he joined the University Department of Electronic Engineering as a UNIX administrator-a role that was pioneering at a time when networking was in its infancy. Collaborating with the network administrator from the Computer Science department, he played a crucial role in establishing the first network connection between two departmental computers. This early network was based on UUCP, allowing computers to dial into each other regularly to exchange data.
He later transitioned to IMEC (imec-int.com), continuing his work as a UNIX administrator. As the field of networking began to evolve, Mark embraced the new opportunities it presented and shifted his focus to Network Management. He was instrumental in implementing IMEC's first internet connection- a 64kB link with the University, offering email and FTP services at a time when ISPs were yet to emerge.
Mark has witnessed the remarkable evolution of technology over the years. He further specialized in monitoring ICT infrastructure, utilizing NAGIOS, a free software solution, to enhance system oversight and management.
With a wealth of experience in networking and system administration,he has significantly contributed to the development and implementation of innovative technology solutions.
