Coverting a date in string format to date for prompt playback

I'm pulling a date from SQL in the following format "YYYYMMDD" (20090619) how can I read this back to the caller? I tried using the set command and the script bombs.

Geoff,

I've done a few searches and found the thread that you replied to dealing with writing datetime to a SQL and changing the format with a SQL query, but I don't do that.

I've found away to do it with substring() and set commands, but it takes like 5 lines of set commands to maker it work and its quite a pause for the caller.

Any ideas?
