  • Viewmail and Windows XP - won't play over IP phone - ( 04-03-2003 )
  • Other Collaboration Subjects
  • Informational only:Client has current Viewmail client on Windows XP desktop. When the user attempted to listen to messages via PC speakers all was fine, however, when attempting to listen via the IP phone, the phone would ring and there would be silence. The message would not play. The problem was resolved by going to Network Connections, right clicking on the local area connection, and chosing properties and clicking the Advanced Tab. Ensure that the Internet Connection Firewall is turned off.

  • Memo for 1st level support , "When users say THE NETWORK IS SLOW..." - ( 03-21-2003 )
  • Other Network Architecture Subjects
  • If you get a lot of less-than helpful trouble reports from your 1st level techs, this may help educate them, and save your valuable time.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When a user calls and says, "The network is slow", their perceived "slowness" may not have anything to do with the network at all. But you're not going to hear a user complain that, "the data file I use with this application is not normally write-locked by another program at this time of day" or "My output is taking forever to generate because the dancing baby screen saver is using all the CPU cycles on my PC". The typical user has no grasp of the intricacies of data processing. However, "The network is slow" is something they can get their hands around. That's a concept they can grasp. Like a delivery truck caught in a traffic jam, or water coming through a partially blocked pipe, they can imagine something "in the network" slowing down their data. So that's what they report. When a user complains that "The network is slow" it's vital to collect information that will let us figure out if there really is a problem, and if so, what's the true cause of it.First of all, there's the issue of whether there really is some actual delay, or if the user just feels like there is a delay.Examples of perceived "slowness", where no problem actually exists:The file they regularly download happens to be larger than usual, and takes more time to transfer from place to place.A report is taking longer than usual to print, because there is more information in it than they are used to.Requested changes in programming get implemented and it results in longer processing time because more work is being done.A user thinks a process is still running, because the PC speaker is muted, and they didn't hear the "ding" that signals completion. When there is some real factor affecting the user's activities, it could be anything from a lack of virtual memory on their PC, to a program bug on the mainframe. An end user telling you, "The network is slow" is like you telling a mechanic, "there's something wrong with my car". Without more information it's going to be extremely difficult to do anything to fix the problem. It's essential to get as complete a picture as possible of the circumstances that brought the user to the conclusion that "the network is slow." The first question to ask is, "What makes you think the network is slow ?" Additional questions would follow from that answer. Your knowledge and experience will guide you in what to ask, given the specific circumstances. Examples of information to collect:What applications were they running What location did the problem occurWhat PC/Printer/scanner they were using Is that the usual device / location they run the application fromWas the application running under the same user login that it usually doesWhen did they experience the problemIs this the usual time they run the applicationHas this problem happened beforeDid they do anything out of the ordinary before they encountered the problemWere they connected by wireless network card at the timeWere they connected over a modem at the timeDid they have any other problems that they might not think are related (like warnings that their hard drive is almost out of free space)Was anything unusual happening at their location when the problem occurred (like power problems, workman tearing up the walls, etc)Etc.Lastly, there's the issue of time between when the problem occurred, and when it was reported. The sooner we can look into a problem, the better the chances are that we will be able to determine what, if anything, is happening. Seeing the problem as it is occurring is the ideal situation, but that's not usually the case. The next best thing is being able to reproduce the problem, and watch it then. Again, the more complete information we have, the better the chances.

  • syslog on a catalyst - ( 03-18-2003 )
  • Other Network Architecture Subjects
  • Quick question please - i have setup syslog on a 5500 to a syslog server on a Solaris machine. The config is set logging server enable set logging server 137.71.38.30 set logging server facility LOCAL7 set logging server severity 6 set logging timestamp enable Does this ensure that all severity 6 and higher [6-0] will get logged to the syslog server? I had the "sys" facility at 5 (the default) and it did not log. I have changed it to 6 and now it does. Why does it not operate when set to 5 if it is supposed to report from 6 to 0? If you have to set facilities like sys and spantree to severity 6, do you have to set everything to severity 6 to get it reported? If so, why have different severities at all? Thanks for any input - appreciated.

  • How to setup connect E1 line between Serial Wanto E1G703 AXC 706 (Ericsson) - ( 03-16-2003 )
  • Other Network Architecture Subjects
  • I am trying to install and configure a Leased-line between two sides. Topology could found here:http://203.162.130.70/anhpt/network/topo.gifIn one side, we have one Router Cisco 2511, use port Serial WAN At other side, we have one Router Ericsson, AXC 706, use port E1 G703.In order to connect two sides to each others, we use modem to extend distance and convert signaling from HOST to Router Cisco. We used encapsulation PPP protocol for this line, but entire now it couldn’t run. Here are some lines of two Router configured:Router Cisco:!interface Serial0/2 description Test for connect to Ericsson Router ip address 10.206.0.6 255.255.255.252 encapsulation pppRouter Ericsson:SET DS1 INTERFACE SIGNALING MODE J0.1 NONESET DS1 CIRCUIT SUPERRATE J0.1.1 1:31SET PHYSICAL PORT SPEED J0.1.1 1984000ADD IP NETWORK ENTRY 10.206.0.6 255.255.255.252 J0.1.1I have some questions:1- Can we implement the system with above topology?2- If this topology is OK. Which problem, we must to pay attention3- I am wondering who has been implemented a system same as above topology?

  • VPIM, Unity 4, Meridian Netgateway and Meridian Mail - ( 03-13-2003 )
  • Other Collaboration Subjects
  • I have a client who has an Option 61C with meridian mail and we want to integrate it with Unity 4.0 using VPIM. I know a Nortel NetGateway is required to get the meridian to talk with Unity through VPIM. Would you know what kind of Meridian Mail will support the NetGateway ? I read somewhere that there are 2 versions of Meridian Mail (EC and the GP/MSM). Which one will work with Netgateway and what Meridian software version should it be at ?If you were able to get this working in your environment, can you give me some things I need to look out for as "gotchas" on the Nortel side ?Thank you in advance for your help...

  • RACAL recording and Cisco IP phones - ( 03-05-2003 )
  • Other Collaboration Subjects
  • I'm sure people have done this with the 7960's. I need to verify how a RACAL series 2 recording device that currently record analog and digital phone conversations for trading, records IP phone conversations on the 7960's. The current scenario uses the Terminal Number in the PBX to record from.. Can a RACAL machine use an IP address??

  • WCCP - ( 03-05-2003 )
  • Other Network Architecture Subjects
  • I implemented WCCP v2 on both my router and Cacheflow. Afterwards, I could see that HTTP traffic was being redirected to the cache engine. I have NTLM configured on the Cacheflow device, but HTTP requests from unauthenticated users are answered anyway. Unauthenticated users that are redirected through the cache engine are not prompted to login. I know this is probably a long shot, but has anyone encountered this problem? Thanks

  • Tandberg and router QoS - ( 02-28-2003 )
  • TelePresence and Video Infrastructure
  • I have two 7206 with enhanced ATM cards attached to LS1010. I am setting up CBWFQ for my Tandberg VTC end point. In the lab environment, I used traffic generator to saturate the VC. For some reason, with or without QoS does not make any noticable difference on Tandberg performance (I try to break it). Even with P2P T1 set up, the same result observed. Does anyone who uses Tandberg product notice the same thing? Even in production network, without QoS, Tandberg works great. But I want to know why. Thanks in advance

  • Locking Users into groups using Funk Radius - ( 02-26-2003 )
  • Other Security Subjects
  • Having a problem where the RADIUS server (Funk) is assigning the users to the appropriate group but the user does not get assigned the rights to that group therefore maintaining the rights of the generic group (no rights).I was able to confirm this by removing the filters to the generic group and having the user test the connection again. This happened to multiple (if not all) users using that group/password (it's in test at the moment).Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Event errors 675 from unity box in domain controller event logs - ( 02-26-2003 )
  • Other Collaboration Subjects
  • Unity 3.1(5)Anyone know if it's normal to get lots of Event 675's from the Unity server in the domain controller event logs?See below:Pre-authentication failed: User Name: LEAH$ User ID: LETNET\LEAH$ Service Name: krbtgt/LETNET.NET Pre-Authentication Type: 0x2 Failure Code: 0x18 Client Address: 10.0.2.30I would normally not think this could be normal at all except I know 675 typically means incorrect passwords - and thought perhaps this was just lots of failed attempts by users to enter their logon credentials in the web options page or something - but hate to assume that :-( - Ken

  • Mobile IP: Running EIGRP/OSPF on roaming interface - ( 02-25-2003 )
  • Other Network Architecture Subjects
  • I have set up a Mobile IP lab with 2650 routers running IOS 12.2(11)T, IP PLUS feature.I have two mobile routers (MR) in the lab. FastEthernet0/0 is the roaming interface (ip mobile router-service roam). Roaming between the different foreign-agents (FA) works very well. However, I am also running a dynamic routing protocol on the MR's. This is because I also want to connect the two MR's together using the roaming interface. The interfaces are on a common subnet, so IP-connectivity are ok.The problem is that both EIGRP and OSPF doesn't seem to work when the interface is configured as a roaming interface. EIGRP shows no neighbor. OSPF shows the interface as passive (no hellos). I have also tried RIP, with the same result. If I disable Mobile IP roaming, the routing protocols works normal on the interfaces, and the MR's can exchange routes.Has anyone information wether this is a bug, or normal behavior?Regards,-Paul
