The Cisco Nexus 1000V has recently released the latest version 4.2(1)SV1(4), which has many new feature enhancements, such as Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing, Virtual Service Datapath (vPath) [for virtual services such as Virtual Security Gateway and Virtual WAAS], Network State Tracking, etc. This blog focuses on installation and upgrade procedure.

In previous releases of the Nexus 1000V, which was the 4.0(4).SV1(X), the upgrade procedure from one release to the next, followed the pattern of upgrading the VSM firmware and then upgrading the VEM firmware.  In the 4.2(1)SV1(4) release, a change has occurred for this particular upgrade process from the previous release 4.0(4)SV1(X).  To upgrade to 4.2(1)SV1(4), upgrading the VEM firmware first is required and then upgrading the VSM firmware.  It is recommended to use 'Upgrade Application' for the VSM upgrade and download it from the VSM home page.  There is also a "Pre-Upgrade Application" that goes through pre-checks on the upgrade to the new version in the environment.

A detail explanation of the upgrade process is located at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus1000/sw/4_2_1_s_v_1_4/upgrade/software/guide/n1000v_upgrade_software.html

We also have videos on the upgrade procedure as well to help in this new upgrade process for this particular release. Please see: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus1000/sw/4_2_1_s_v_1_4/upgrade/screencast/guide/n1000v_upgrade_screencasts.html

In future releases, the upgrade procedure will follow the standard pattern of upgrading the VSM firmware first and then the VEM firmware.
