Nexus 7K Ethanalyzer not available?

Wes Schochet

Hi All-

I am trying to do some troubleshooting - in the lab, in a non-prod environment.  I am looking to test Ethanalyzer, but it does not seem to be available on my switch.  Is there a feature that is necessary or some other prerequisite that I am missing?

Hi Wes,

On early versions of N7K NX-OS software, Ethanalyzer can only be executed from the admin/default VDC. Are you attempting to run Ethanalyzer on the admin VDC, or on a "child" VDC?

Later N7K NX-OS software (I believe 8.x, but I don't recall the exact NX-OS software release) allows Ethanalyzer to be executed from a child VDC as well as the admin VDC.

Be forewarned that in earlier NX-OS software releases, because Ethanalyzer is executed on the admin VDC, the control plane traffic received on all child VDCs will be visible in Ethanalyzer. As such, you may need to use a combination of display-filters and capture-filters to troubleshoot the specific flow or type of traffic that you want.

I hope this helps - thank you!
