Nexus 9336c-FX2 LACP load balancing Hash Algorithm

Hi

In the following link, it was not mentioned that we can change LACP load-balancing Algorithm on 9300-FX2 but it was directly motioned that we can do this on 9200,9300-EX and 9300-GX :

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus9000/sw/93x/interfaces/configuration/guide/b-cisco-nexus-9000-nx-os-interfaces-configuration-guide-93x/b-cisco-nexus-9000-nx-os-interfaces-configuration-guide-93x_chapter_010000.html#conc...

This is applicable for NXOS9.3

While in Version 7.x This was not mentioned:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus9000/sw/7-x/interfaces/configuration/guide/b_Cisco_Nexus_9000_Series_NX-OS_Interfaces_Configuration_Guide_7x/b_Cisco_Nexus_9000_Series_NX-OS_Interfaces_Configuration_Guide_7x_chapter_0111...

I want to ask, Is changing the hash algorithm of LACP supported on 9336x-FX2 or not? and which document is correct?

Is this mean by upgrading NXOS from 7.x to 9.3 we will lose an ability?

Thank you

Hi @Peyman Zadmehr

Based on the documentation 9300-FX2 does support different load balancing algorithms:

  • Port-channel symmetric hashing is supported on Cisco Nexus 9200, 9300-EX, 9300-FX/FX2, and 9300-GX platform switches and Cisco Nexus 9500 platform switches with N9K-X9732C-EX, N9K-X9736C-EX, N9K-X9736C-FX, and N9K-X9732C-FX line cards.

Reference Guidelines and limitations: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus9000/sw/93x/interfaces/configuration/guide/b-cisco-nexus-9000-nx-os-interfaces-configuration-guide-93x/b-cisco-nexus-9000-nx-os-interfaces-configuration-guide-93x_chapter_010000.html#id_1...

As a rule of thumb, when it comes to load balancing on Nexus platforms, check whatever the port-channel load-balance command lists as options and that is what is supported. If is not supported, I would expect a syslog message saying is not supported (hopefully).

If you already have a specific hashing configured and working in 7.x, the expected behavior, unless specified otherwise, is that it will work on 9.x as well. If you see any deviations, definitely open a case with DCRS TAC team.

Cheers,

Sergiu

Dear Sergiu

Thank you for the answer.

My concern is this phrase in the mentioned document:

Configuring hash load balancing applies to unicast and multicast traffic on Cisco Nexus 9200, 9300-EX, and 9300-GX Series switches.

Does this means It is not supported on FX2 models? Personally I think it should be since FX2 models are more powerful..

About Symmetric Hashing, I think it is applicable for IP traffic, What should I do for Layer-2 traffic?

Can I change the Hash algorithm for Src-Dst MAC?

Thank you
