Upgrading 1000v & vSphere 5 without downtime

What's the best way to upgrade a vSphere 4 environment with a 1000v to a vSphere 5 environment with a 1000v? I'd like to do the upgrade without having any VM downtime.

Is there any way to upgrade the VEMs and VSMs without requiring host restarts when the host is connected to vCenter 5?

I found this procedure in the Cisco documentation. My understanding is that I can update the ESXi image with the VEM bits prior to installation. That means there will be no downtime, correct?
