Using 1000v with Flex-10

Hello,

I have had some problems in the connection between Nexus1000v and Flex-10. Initially we were losing access to some servers and the solution was setting the mac-pinning in the Nexus1000v but now I realize that some servers cannot get a response from the gateway but if I force the pinning of the vethernet to another one everything works correctly.

The presentation of CiscoLive (BRKVIR-3013) stated that when using mac-pinning you should not configure the upstream port-channel.  I could not clarify this issue but I have "channel-group X mode active" in the upstream.

Does anyone had this issue? Should I change my upstream to mode “on” or remove the port-channel?

Best regards,

Antonio

Re: Using 1000v with Flex-10

Hello Antonio.  Do you have different blade servers on the C7000 chassis?  The port-profile for the uplink should be set to "channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning".  This is because the Flex-10 does not have any method of port-channeling from the Flex-10 downstream to the network interfaces on the blade servers themselves.  That is why on the N1KV we provide a host-mode virtual port-channel.  What is your configuration (server profile) for the blade server that is having issues?

Re: Using 1000v with Flex-10

Hello Cutran,

I think the blade servers are all the same. If they aren't will there be any problem?

My port-profile configuration is:

port-profile type ethernet uplink

  vmware port-group

  switchport mode trunk

  switchport trunk allowed vlan 1-3967,4048-4093

  channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning

  no shutdown

  system vlan 608,910-911

  state enabled

In my upstream i have 2 Nexus7000 with vpc, connecting two links to each Flex-10 (they are 2 for HP enclosure).

In the Nexus

interface port-channel25

  switchport mode trunk

  switchport trunk allowed vlan .....

  vpc 25

  spanning-tree port type edge trunk

  spanning-tree bpduguard enable

  mtu 9216

interface Ethernet3/9

  switchport mode trunk

  switchport trunk allowed vlan ...

  spanning-tree port type edge trunk

  spanning-tree bpduguard enable

  mtu 9216

  channel-group 25 mode active

  no shutdown

Re: Using 1000v with Flex-10

Hello Antonio.  If all of your servers are the same, then the "uplink" profile should be valid across all of them.  I'm not sure why making the change to mac-pinning would affect the blades.  The vPC from the Flex-10 to N7K is not really relevant, unless the "network" on the Flex-10 is missing some VLANs in that configuration (specifcally the control vlan).  If you are missing the control vlan within the configuration of Virtual Connect, that would break some of the servers if they are pinned to the other Flex-10 network.  Have you opened a TAC case or contacted your local Cisco SE?
