APIC Stateful App with own docker image not installing

I made a simple hello world stateful app for Cisco APIC.

I tried changing the docker image to a completely different docker image.  I packaged the app.  When I try to add it to APIC after it uploads it continues to appear as "Installing" for a long time (it's been 3 hours and ciscostill going).

Are there logs or something I can look at to see what's going on?  (There are no logs in the  /data2/logs/MyApp directory on the APIC server.)

Are there requirements (other than the 1GB max size) for docker images?

As a side, the developer guide says

If you bring your own docker image or update the Cisco's reference image, you must first unzip or untar the docker.tgz file, then remove the manifest.json file, and finally tar or zip the docker.tgz file.

When I tried removing the manifest.json file the packaging failed with a message about not having a repositories or manifest.json file.  When I keep it in, the packager works and I get an *aci file.  But it won't install.

Back to the main questions -- how can I tell what's going on with a app install?  And are there other requirements for docker images?
