"Change Recipient to" but only for the matched recipient

Looking for advice on how to achieve a specific recipient change scenario.

I've recently inherited an existing setup with a content filter rule that has 26 "Envelope Recipient" conditions with specific recipients listed. If one or more of them is matched on a message, the rule uses the "Change Recipient to" action to redirect the message to a new single address.

What I'm finding is that if other recipients are also in the To: field (that don't match the list of recipients in the rule), those extra recipients no longer receive a copy of the message. I assume this is the intended behavior for CES but it isn't quite what we are looking to do.

What we would like to do is redirect the message away from the matched recipients, but still have the unmatched recipients receive their copy of the message. Any suggestions on how to achieve that?

So, from what I'm gathering, what you would want to do is create a new incoming mail policy for the emails you do want to redirect. Then have this apply the change recipient to content filter applied.

The way the ESA works with email is if not all recipients match a policy, it'll break it into basically 2 emails or flows. One would go through the new policy, and the rest would go through the regular/default policy as normal.

You need to split this out as a Policy, which will splinter the email. (in the help search for "splintering")

Start by copying the content filter to a new one, but with no condition.

Then under Incoming Mail Polices, create a new policy, and for the Users, you can add these emails under “following Recipients”.  Then for this policy, under content filters, enable the copy you created. (you could use the old one… but you don’t want the check being performed twice, and you don’t want to maintain it in two places…

If you’re using AD, you could also put these users in a group and use LDAP to set the users.
