Relation between Mail flow policies & Incomin or outgoin mail policies

Dear Team,

I am new to the Cisco Cloud Email Security, Can anyone please help me understand if there is any dependency/Correlation between Mail Flow policies and incoming or outgoing email policies? or do they work independently?

Incoming/Outgoing email policies are focused on defining rules and actions for emails that are either incoming or outgoing from your organization. They are typically used for enforcing security and compliance measures on emails that originate from or are destined for your organization. They are used to inspect and filter incoming emails for threats, such as spam, malware, phishing, and other security risks. Outgoing emmail policies are used to monitor and enforce security and compliance measures for emails sent from your organization to the outside world. You can configure these policies to handle content filtering, attachment scanning, Data Loss Prevention , and more.

On the other hand, Mail Flow policies are designed to control the flow of email traffic within your organization. They are used to enforce routing and delivery rules for emails within your internal network. These policies typically focus on controlling how email messages are routed internally between different parts of your organization. For example, you can configure policies to route emails to specific email gateways or servers based on criteria like sender, recipient, or domain. Mail Flow policies are mainly concerned with managing the internal email infrastructure and ensuring the efficient flow of emails within your organization.

While these policies serve different purposes, they can work together to provide end-to-end email security. For example, you might configure Incoming Email Policies to filter and block malicious content from external sources, and then use Mail Flow Policies to route those emails to specialized internal servers or departments for further analysis or handling.

Mail flow policy is mostly about the connection based on IP thats connecting. Controlling thr flow: e.g how many connections, how many mails per connection, check for SPF/DKIM/DMARC, scan this mail with AV/anti-spam.

Incoming Mail Policy makes decisions based on the to/from addressing, and is where the content checking happens.

They overlap/intersect in that the workqueue respects the flags Mail Flow might set about scanning for spam/av, and SPF.
