test inbound email -- IronPort

Hello,

I have a newly installed Cisco IronPort (installed in the DMZ) which is connecting to an Exchange server (installed on the inside network).

I was able to test the outgoing emails.

I need to test the incoming emails. The MX records for this domain are currently pointing to another system. How can I test if the incoming email is functional without having to point the MX records to the system?

Thanks,

Justine.

Hello,

Try to build yourself a SMTP connexion with telnet command. Please find below all steps :

telnet yourcisco 25

HELO existingdomain.com

MAIL FROM: <existingaddress@existingdomain.com>

RCPT TO: <youraddress@yourdomain.com>

DATA

From: existingaddress&existingdomain.com

To: youraddress@yourdomain.com

Subject: EMAIL TEST

CONTENT OF YOUR EMAIL

.

Don't forget to finish your email with a line with only a point "."

Hello Adrien,

Thank you for your reply.

I tried what you suggested, but the IronPort does not recognise any of the commands.

I get the following response:

500 #5.5.1 command not recognized

Maybe there's something missing in my configuration?

Thanks in advance,

Justine.

Hello Justine,

Can you give me on which command do you have this answer ?

Adrien

HELO domain.com

where "domain" is the customer's domain.

I also tried the MAIL FROM but I got the same error.

Thanks,

Justine.

If you are going through the ASA, it is ESMTP inspection what probably kills it. Disable it if you want to test with telnet.
