ethan12345

good morning

we have a pair of 5510's set up as Primary/Secondary  failover pair. I have gone through the high availability wizard via  ASDM, and everything seemed to complete ok with out any issues. A "show  failover" show that the inside interface of the standby unit is "failed"   [see paste below]

When  I pull the power of the primary the amber active light on the standby  unit turns green but no connectivity is restored, meaning I cannot get  internet, etc. After high availability failover wizard I cannot ping the  standby units inside interface of 192.168.100.242 which I am assuming  is normal. And then During a failover test I have console cable plugged  in to the standby, the active light goes green but I am unable to ping  anywhere beyond the device itself.  Thanks in advance for any assistance

Hello Ethan,

It should not be failed, that means that the hello packets being exchanged between each other are not being received.

Please check the switch port assisgnemt, check the interface speeds and duplex and make sure they are on the same vlan ( switch cables,)

Hello Ethan,

Can you share the configuration on both units?

Also when you perfom the test what is the state of the standby unit? Is it failed again?

Julio

I will have to perform a failover test after hours so I can get that to you later. What information do you need when I do the failover test?

Hello,

I mean you are saying that failover does happen but connectivity is not restored after the switchover.

So basically I want you to test it again and then on the secondary check the failover state for all of the interfaces,

Then try to check the arp table? try to ping the default gateway from the Secondary ASA ( that is now the primary).

Try to ping 4.2.2.2 as well.

Do a packet tracer from an inside host.

Post the result and we will work from there,

Regards,

Julio

ok I have to test after hours  and was planning on testing tomorrow night.

Just a quick recap - I set up the primary the way  we wanted it, then the secondary with just basic SSH access and ip's on  the interfaces, then via ASDM I went through the high availability  wizard. Everything on the wizard completed and duplicated ok but after  that the standby seems to take the identity of the primary, and I cannot  ping it. The only way I can access it is via console cable directly.

The way its set up is we have a 3750 core stack and the outside  interfaces are on the same VLAN as the internet router, controlled by  the ISP. The inside interfaces are on our regular LAN VLAN. Before the  failover wizard I could ping both inside interfaces, now only the primary inside interface.

when I do a  show failover command either of the ASA's, they show the inside interface of  the standby ASA as "failed"

Anyway Im  trying to set up a logging server for another failover test so maybe  that will help. Can you tell me what to look for on the arp tables and  how to do that exactly? Im assuming you're asking for a sho arp but what  am I looking for exactly ?

Hello Ethan,

It should not be failed, that means that the hello packets being exchanged between each other are not being received.

Please check the switch port assisgnemt, check the interface speeds and duplex and make sure they are on the same vlan ( switch cables,)

ok thats interesting because I have a webfilter in line in between the primary inside interface and the switch, and noticed it at half duplex so set everything to auto and then another show failover revealed that all interfaces were normal (waiting).

Thinking that was it, I just pulled the power on the primary and initiated a failover and still clients cant get out. I did a show failover on the standby during the test and got this

ok 5 stars thank you! your help put me on the right track

so this is so simple I stupidly overlooked it - the inside of the primary is E0/1 and the inside of the standby was E0/0. I have a WAN VLAN on our core switch for the internet router and the outside interfaces. When you create a failover it copies the config of the primary to the standby unit exactly. So since the interfaces were reversed, that explains why the standby inside interface became suddenly unreachable after the failover wizard, it switched the inside and the outside configs - resulting in switch ports instantly configured to the wrong VLANs.
