Hi,
I have a Cisco ASA5550 Firewall out of the box; no configuration. During operation it's fans are frequently running high. The heatsink is becoming hot. This is happening without any throughput. It's processor is running at average 1% capacity.
Is this normal?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Mike,
Get in touch with TAC, out of the box ASA should be covered under warranty support (90 days)
Rule of thumb - there is no good reason for heatsink to have high temperature without load. Although it's best if you talk numbers :-)

Thanks Marcin,
The ASA unit is a refurbished item, unfortuantly my location (Ethiopia) does not support a warranty. Is there a way to monitor the CPU core temperature using ASDM version 6.4?

Mike,
No ASDM, no CLI. But from what the guys from firewall team told me you can check with SNMP:
ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/supportlists/asa/asa-supportlist.html
I've done a quick search and maybe you will have some luck with
ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/v2/ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB.my
or maybe:
ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/v2/CISCO-FIREWALL-MIB.my
Both have temperature listed as a valid option.
