asa912-smp-k8.bin vs asa9-12-1-smp-k8.bin

I'm upgrading a ASA5525 and I'm a little confused, current code is asa912-smp-k8.bin, dated 11/24/2014. On the download portal the latest version is asa9-12-1-smp-k8.bin. I'm assuming they are different, but why have the very similar format? Can I go from asa912-smp-k8.bin to asa9-12-1-smp-k8.bin directly?

You are coming from a completely outdated version 9.1(2) and want to move to the newest und likely unstable version 9.12(1)? Doesn't sound very logical to me ...

But yes, you can directly update to the new version. But if you don't need any of the newest features in 9.12, I would upgrade to the latest interims-version of 9.10. That is likely more stable.
