FMC Upgrade Failed from 6.2.3.10 to 6.4.0

Hello,

I tried to upgrade FMC from 6.2.3.10 to 6.4.0.

The Readiness check completed successfully.

I started the update after that. It got stuck at 9%. I saw after in the message center the following:

Local Install

Instlling Cisco Firepower Mgmt Center Upgrade version: 6.4.0-102

update installation failed: [9%] fatal error: handle_kill(): Upgrade killed with signal QUIT or TERM

Does anybody know what it means?
How do we overcome this?

Thanks and regards,

Konstantinos

Hello,

It seemed that the upgrade completed successfully.

It was stuck at 9% for about two hours. The whole thing took about 5 and a half hours.

I've not seen that error and I've done dozens of FMC upgrades.

You might be able to find more details under /var/log/sf/<folder for the upgrade>. Look at the end of status.log and then drill into the sub-script that failed.

If nothing is obvious there, I'd suggest opening a TAC case.

Hello Marvin,

I saw a file in that folder and it had the same error.

I did not look in the other files.

Is there any way to download the file form the fmc? I tried winscp but could not connect!

Thanks and regards,

Konstantinos

File transfer from FMC requires you use the FMC as the client and connect to a server. Winscp is also a client application.

For these small text files it's generally just as easy to turn on logging all output to file in your terminal program and just cat (printout to screen) the file(s).

Hello,

I am trying again now to install the upgrade.

It is stuck in 9% but there is not an error yet in the logs.

From the processes that run I see this one SFDCNotificatio and it is taking up all the CPU.

Do you know what it is?

Thanks and regards,

Konstantinos

What hardware platform are you upgrading? An ASA 5506 can take multiple hours but an FMC (even virtual) should not take more than an hour or so.

If it's failing multiple times you should consider opening a TAC case.

The FMC is virtual.

It is the second time now and it seems to be failing.

How did you resolve this?

I am facing the same issue with FMC750 upgrade from 6.2.0.to 6.4.0.

At 2%, 9% and then finally at 19% upgrade seemed to be hung. I left the upgrade to continue and left office  to check back in morning.

When I returned in morning, I saw task notification saying upgrade installation failure - Unable to update task status - 4 times

Installing Cisco Firepower Mgmt Center Upgrade version: 6.4.0-102

update installation failed: [9%] fatal error: Error running script 200_pre/500_stop_system.sh.
