Force Failover without Failover Link/Config on standby unit

Hello.

I read http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/asa82/configuration/guide/config/ha_active_standby.html#wp1079450 I have some questions about Failover on ASA 5580.

1) If I configure the standby unit it will not update active unit.

What happens if a failover occurs? Forced or Manually? The standby unit will use the changed configuration or it will update the running configuration and the changes will be lost?

2) If I lost the Failover link(direct connected)

Failover wont occur. If I force the failover it will happen? Do I need to force both?

I know the connections will be lost.

And to finish, If I only can upgrade the firewall standby hardware, add new interface for example (and do the interface configuration). Is there any way to use failover or it´s better to isolate the unit. After sometime we will install the Interface on the other unit.

thks.
