Problem getting any traffic out of an ASA 5505

DannyBurchett

Guys,

Hope someone can assist, suspect it's a fairly simple issue that will highlight my lack of knowledge rather than anything else!

We have a BT Infinity broadband circuit which terminates at a vdsl modem, I've plugged an ASA 5505 into the back of this modem and gone through the ADSM quick setup wizard (yes I'm that much of a beginner!) The config that's been generated is pasted below, the symptomns I'm seeing are;

The ASA is setup with PPPOE on the internet connection, I assume this is correct as if I do a show IP on the ASA I'm getting an IP address that has been assigned, if I change the password to the wrong one then I get no IP (as expected).

If I ping from the ASA to an internet connection I'm getting "no route" error messages, if I try a "ping outside x.x.x.x" then I get no repsonses.

The ASA can ping it's external IP, the client machines can ping it's internal, however nothing appears to be able to get out.

Unfortunately this thing isn't based on the site I'm located at and is a pain to get to, so if anyone can find the fault that's brilliant, hiowever if possible and people have further questions that's great but can you also give some options on what to do depending on the answers as I'm hoping to only go back to site once!

Hi Danny,

Yes, you would need a default route on the ASA, something like this:

route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 1

This gateway ip would be the ip address of the ISP device upstream.

Moreover you wouldneed an ACL as well, to allow ping replies:

access-list outside_access_in permit icmp any any

access-group outside_access_in in interface outside

and it shoudl ping after that.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Varun

Thanks,
Varun Rao

For the default route can I use the interface itself rather than the upstream device? Reason is BT are notoriously bad at giving out information and won't talk to you unless you are using their pre-configured equipment.

Regards,

Danny

Hi Danny,

This default gateway is the ip address of the next for the outside interface only, so you would definitely need to know the ip address, i am not really sure if BT should have any problem with that, because they should definitely reveal this info to the client.

Thanks,

Varun

Thanks,
Varun Rao

I'll see if I can get anything out of them, they are an awful company to try and deal with! I'll let you know how I get on...

Many thanks for the advice so far!

Sure no problem.... let me know if you get stuck anywhere else .

-Varun

Thanks,
Varun Rao

Danny

I know what you mean about BT, they are just too big sometimes to get a quick answer. You are using DHCP to get an outside address so they may well be supplying you with a default-route as well. Can you add this to your config and see if it helps -

ip address dhcp setroute

Jon

Finally managed to get some more testing done...

ip addresss pppoe setroute

gave

ERROR: No vpdn group for PPPoE has been defined

ERROR: ip address command failed

I managed to get the default route off the existing BT router and added

route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 81.134.112.1

As sh route then showed the default route had been accepted, however still unable to ping anything on the internet.

Any further ideas?

Danny

Lets then go the capture way, setup a laptop connected to your inside interface, assign it an IP, lets say 192.168.200.10

Do a "show ip" first, check the current ip of the outside interface.

Then we woudl need to apply captures for them:

access-list cap permit ip ho 192.168.200.10 any

access-list cap permit ip any ho 192.168.200.10

access-list cap permit ip any

access-list cap permit ip any

cap capin access-list cap interface inside

cap capo access-list cap interface outside.

alongwith it, run the command:

packet-tracer input inside tcp host 192.168.200.10 2345 1.1.1.1 80 detailed

collect the logs as well when the traffic is denied.

This would give us a clearer picture.

Thanks,

Varun

Thanks,
Varun Rao

Varun,

Will get this done, bit of an idiot question, do I need to do anything specific on the PC to generate traffic that will be picked up by the traffic capture? Also are the logs generated on the console so just capture the output from that or do I need to go somewhere specific to get the logs?

Danny

Hi Danny,

No, you would just need the IP address and the default gateway on the PC, nothing else. Just generate traffic from it after applying captures.

-Varun

Thanks,
Varun Rao

Hi,

Can you Ping your defaultgateway?

Regards,

Robert

Sent from Cisco Technical Support iPad App

Hi Danny,

Try the below...

interface Vlan2

nameif outside

security-level 0

pppoe client vpdn group Infinity ->Unless carrier requires this, remove this entry. All you need for VPDN is username/pass.

ip address pppoe -> add keyword 'setroute' at the end (ip address pppoe setroute)

!

Remove the default route statement (route outside).

hth

MS

just to confirm, i successfully setup our ASA 5505 thanks to this page. The following works:

interface Vlan2

nameif outside

security-level 0

pppoe client vpdn group BTINFINITY

ip address pppoe setroute

!

vpdn group BTINFINITY request dialout ppoe

vpdn group BTINFINITY localname "username provided bt = *******@hg**.btclick.com"

vpdn group BTINFINITY ppp authentication chap

vpdn username *******@hg**.btclick.com password "pw provided by bt" store-local

!

remove your current route outside if one is set from a different isp and add a new route outside, the default gateway needed will not be supplied by BT as they are renowned for their "we do not support any product that is not our own"

So to find the default gateway, on the BT Business hub provided goto Settings > Broadband > Routing and there will be a listing for interface bridge0 which has your external IP and gateway. that is the gateway IP you need to set as the route outside.

route outside ***.***.***.***

job done!

Hi I'm having the same issue as Danny in that I can pick up my external IP but unable to ping or access the internet, if someone could look at my config and see if I've missed anything obvious? Please note I'm also a beginner and have configured it using the ADSM GUI.

One question do I need to enable DNS on the outside interface and specify a DNS server or should all of that work automatically?
