In short the difference between ASA and FTD is running a firewall as compared to next gen firewall (firewall plus IPS)

In addition to the great points above, it is always best to look into the release notes for FTD as we get new features integrated with the newer releases going forward.

I believe the largest caveats to going with FTD is not having the full functionality of the Cisco Anyconnect. But, you might not use some of the more advanced feature sets.
