Dears,

We are trying to upload new background image for 8841 phone.

1. create 800x480 png file

2. create 139X109 thumbnail png file

3. copy Lixt.xml content from web (http://cucmIP:6970/Desktops/800x480x24/list.xml). Add needed rows to List.xml file

<ImageItem Image="TFTP:Desktops/800x480x24/test_thumb.png" URL="TFTP:Desktops/800x480x24/test.png"/>

4. upload these 3 files to Desktops/800x480x24

5. restart TFTP in publisher (standby server) and subscriber (active server)

6. create NEW Common Phone Profile:

   a. uncheck - Enable End User Access to Phone Background Image Setting
   b. clarify the path to new image - Desktops/800x480x24/test.png

7. Reset/restart phone.

8. Check on 5 phones (8841 model)

9. Tried variations:

   a. Desktops/800x480x24/

   b. Desktops/800x480x24

   c. /Desktops/800x480x24/

   d. /Desktops/800x480x24

10. Delete List.xml file and upload new one

11. Tried variations:

   a. List.xml

   b. list.xml

cucm version 12.5

Can someone advice another solution or point out what we are doing wrong.

create NEW Common Phone Profile:

a. uncheck - Enable End User Access to Phone Background Image Setting
b. clarify the path to new image - Desktops/800x480x24/test.png>>>>>  only the file name test.png is enough. Apply this Common phone Profile on the phone's  and restart the phone.

If you are using Common Phone profile, there is no need of List.xml.

You add customized wallpaper in one of two ways:

  • Using the List file

  • Using a Common Phone Profile

If you want the user to be able to select your image from various wallpapers available on the phone, then modify the List file. But if you want to push the image to the phone, then create or modify an existing Common Phone Profile.

Regardless of your approach, note the following:

  • Your images must be in PNG format and the full sized image must be within the following dimensions:
    • Thumbnail images—139 pixels (width) by 109 pixels (height)

    • Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series—800 pixels by 480 pixels

    • Cisco IP Phone 8851 and 8861 Key Expansion Module with a dual LCD screen—320 by 480 pixels

    • Cisco IP Phone 8865 Key Expansion Module with a dual LCD screen—320 by 480 pixels

    • Cisco IP Phone 8800 Key Expansion Module with a single LCD screen—272 by 480 pixels

  • Upload the images, the thumbnails, and List file to your TFTP server. The directory is:

    • Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series—Desktops/800x480x24

    • Cisco IP Phone 8851 and 8861 Key Expansion Module with a dual LCD screen—Desktops/320x480x24

    • Cisco IP Phone 8865 Key Expansion Module with a dual LCD screen—Desktops/320x480x24

    • Cisco IP Phone 8800 Key Expansion Module with a single LCD screen—Desktops/272x480x24

After the upload is done, you restart the TFTP server.

  • If you don't want the user selecting their own wallpaper, then disable Enable End User Access to Phone Background Image Setting. Save and apply the phone profile. Restart the phones so your changes take effect.

Upload a .png file into the correct Desktops/800x480x24
The Thumbnail images—139 (width) X 109 (height) is mostly used for end users to
select an image from user preferences through an IP phone. The pixels are smaller, so the image appears
inside the preferences window on the IP Phone LED screen. If you do not provide the end user a choice to select a background image, the Thumbnail .png file isn't necessary.

Expansion Module:
Cisco IP Phone 8851 and 8861 Key Expansion Module with a dual LCD screen—320 by 480 pixels
This .png file must have the exact same name as the Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series—800 pixels by 480 pixels
that you earlier uploaded to tftp Desktops/800x480. Since you upload the .png named file into Desktops/320x480 there isn't a duplicate folder. The expansion module LED screen is slimmer and longer so I would recommend only matching the expansion module image background color with the IP Phone .png image background color. If you try to copy a bigger IP Phone image (with pictures) to the thinner expansion module (the image distorts) a busy background isn't a good idea. Also remember that the IP Phone numbers and letters reflect the opposite of the background color. Dark background colors populate a white or lighter numerical color on the IP Phone LED screen and vice-versa.

Uploading to a CUCM Cluster make sure you add the .png image files to the cluster servers running tftp (also Publisher) *if you plan on letting the end user change a background image. If you hard code the background image within the Common Phone Profile
or directly on the Deivce > Phone Configuration > Phone Type > Product Specific Configuration Layout page > Background Image >
(Type the exact .png file name into Parameter Value that you uploaded into tftp desktops) i.e., 800_image.png (don't forget to type the .png after the file name). And last remember to check the Override Common Settings tick box, save, apply config and reset the device and or Common Phone Profile for the image to upload into the IP Phone. The IP Phone will reload, and this is service impacting no matter which route you take. If you plan to manually push the .png image file to a phone and think taking a short cut by only uploading the .png image to whatever CUCM the phone is registered to. Remember if the IP Phone failovers or loses the registered CUCM the background image will stay with the IP Phone until power is lost. If the IP phone registers to a CUCM and the .png file is not uploaded to that server, the image will not load. I've also seen an image stick to a device (cached) if the image isn't propagated throughout the cluster (10.5.2) a factory default of the IP Phone was the only way to correct the image background.

To manipulate an image, I found Microsoft paint is the easiest software to make changes and add image details.
