I read the Cisco documents related to the requirements for the custom background images for the 8861 phones. I also looked at other people's notes online. I have the new custom background image working just fine on my 8861, but the only problem is the thumbnail display for this image isn't showing up in the wallpaper choices on the phone. What I see is a blank image with a triangle in the middle and an exclamation point. For some reason it's not able to load/display the thumbnail preview for me. Any ideas why?
I have have already...
- Verified the thumbnail image is the correct size/dimensions (159x109)
- Verified my List.xml file show the correct file name and directory for this thumbnail image
- Restarted the TFTP service on the server I'm using to test with (I restarted TFTP on all the CUCM servers, actually....after uploading the new List.xml file and the new background images)
- Reset/Restarted the phone
If I go ahead and select the blank image with the triangle, the correct custom background image does appear and I can select it and use it as my background. I'm just not sure why the thumbnail isn't working right.
Let's pretend for a moment that my List.xml file only contained the new custom background. This file would be uploaded to the /Desktops/800x480x24 directory along with the actual image files. Image file names in this example would be custom1-thumb-159-109.png for the thumbnail image and custom1-thumb-800-480.png for the full size image that is used for the background/wallpaper. List.xml file would look like this:
<CiscoIPPhoneImageList>
<ImageItem Image="TFTP:Desktops/800x480x24/custom1-thumb-159-109.png" URL="TFTP:Desktops/800x480x24/custom1-full-800-480.png"/>
</CiscoIPPhoneImageList>

Documentation is wrong concerning the 88XX phones.
Try 139 pixels (width) X 109 pixels (height)
Take a look at the following bug.

Hello,
I have not seen the exclamation on the thumbnail image before, but my first thought is there is a problem with the image itself. Right size?
I don't see a problem with your list.xml.
Verify the thumbnail image has been uploaded to the tftp server, especially the one that the phone is registered to. I uploaded the images to all my callmanagers.
admin:file list tftp /Desktops/800x480x24/*
Verify the list.xml file is on the server correctly. When I mistakenly use microsoft word to create an xml file, the xml file will show as garbage when displayed on CCM.
admin:file view tftp /Desktops/800x480x24/List.xml
You could replace the thumbnail image with a working thumbnail image. If that works, you know its something to do with the image itself.
Hope this helps,

I actually created another wallpaper image and associated smaller image for the thumbnail to test it again and I get the same result. I verified the size (159x109) of the thumbnail again and verified the file is on the server I'm registered the phone to (TFTP server). I've restarted TFTP after the other new custom image was uploaded and the new List.xml file. I verified the xml file looks ok using the command you mentioned. I used notepad to create the xml file.
Interestingly, a 9971 and 8945 work just fine with the new wallpapers I created for those phones (one is SIP and the other is SCCP and they both use a 640x480 size of this new custom image). On the phones that use the 640x480 size images, both the thumbnail (123x111) and main wallpaper (640x480)image work fine. Both the original custom image I created and the new second one I created about an hour later.
For whatever reason, this is only a problem with my 8861 with the display that uses the 800x480 image file for the wallpaper and 159x109 for the thumbnail.

Great. Thanks for finding that. Changing the thumbnail image to 139x109 corrects the problem :-)

Quick question. Do you know if installing an updated device package would wipe out my custom List.xml files or my custom image files? I hope not. I'll keep copies of all the files, but it would be a pain to have to upload all the files again and restart TFTP on all the servers after installing a new device package.
Thanks
