8945 Lockup Up During Firmware Upgrade

After we upgraded our CUCM 8.6 to 10.5 we had an issue with 8945 phones locking up after a reboot during the upgrade process to the latest firmware. To get the phones back on line we had to list a lower version firmware in the "Phone Load Name" field of each device. The phones are currently using sccp 9-2-3-5 and the device default in CUCM is sccp894x.9-4-2-8. I understand we need to take an intermediate step when upgrading from 9-2 to 9-4. I have downloaded the sccp 9-3-4-17 firmware from Cisco but I would like to check myself before moving forward with four questions.

First, is sccp 9-3-4-17 the correct intermediate firmware to load?

Second, when I install the firmware into CUCM using Software Upgrades>Install/Upgrade will it overwrite the 9-4 firmware or will it just add the 9-3 firmware to the list of available builds?

Third, I am familiar with the process for upgrading a single or small group of phones to new firmware in 8.6. Will the same procedure work in 10.5?

Fourth, do I need to load the new firmware in all nodes or just the publisher?

Hi Peter,

1. Yes, that is the correct firmware (from the ReadMe for 9-4-2)

Release 9.4(2)SR2 can only be upgraded from 9.3(4) and later. Releases prior to 9.3(4) have to be upgraded to 9.3(4) first.

2. It will overwrite the Device Defaults with the 9-3-4 firmware.

3. Yes the procedure remains the same (see ReadMe )

4. Yes the firmware needs to be installed on all nodes;

Before using the 9.3(4) firmware for Cisco Unified IP Phone models 8941 and 8945 with Cisco Unified Communication Manager Release 7.1.5 and higher, you need install the latest firmware on all Cisco Unified Communication Manager servers in the cluster.

Cheers!
