ATA187 Port 2 Unused - Best Practice?

James Hawkins

Hi,

I am deploying some ATA187s connecting to CUCM 9.1.

I only need to use one port so the second port is unused but I have noticed from the ATA web page that it attempts to register with CUCM.

What is the best practice for port 2? - is it ok to leave it unconfigured on CUCM or is it recommended to create an ATA187 phone in CUCM with a dummy DN?

Or is there a way of disabling port 2?

Thanks

Hi James,

Hope life is treating you well buddy!

For my 2 cent$ I prefer just adding a dummy DN to port 2 to keep it from

sending zillions of registration attempts. There is a way to disable the port

(I'm pretty sure) but I just like the path of least resistance especially when

you might want to use the port next week

Cheers!

In fact, there's a bug I know about, just can't remember the ID, when the second port on ata is not configured, it causes the ata to keep requesting the configuration file for 2nd port, this leads the ata to crash. So, as Rob metioned, you may register the 2nd port and assign a dummy dn,

Thanks Rob and Jorge,

On the ATA186 it was possible to disable the second port by setting SID1 under SCCP parameters to 0 - see below - so not being able to do this on the ATA187 seems a step backwards.

I will add some dummy DNs as suggested.

On a related topic should the ATA187 be able to work on a standard config switch port?

For example, a switch has ports set as shown below:

switchport mode access

switchport access vlan 100

switchport voice vlan 200

This works fine for 69xx and 79xx phones but when an ATA187 was connected it picked up an IP address in the data VLAN and was unable to register as the scope for that VLAN does not have option 150 set.

When I changed the access VLAN to 200 the ATA registered fine.

Is this the expected behaviour?

Cheers

James
