cisco 7811 firmware upgarde and web access

how to upgrade the firmware of cisco phone 7811 without using "Unified Communications Manager"?

do we need to have Unified Communications Manager or something similar to this in order to configure this model of cisco phone? I used to change the setting with browsing the ip address of other model of cisco phone.

right now it displays a "Welcome" screen with the text "Enter activation code or service domain", and I found out I need to upgrade firmware to fix the issue

I cannot browse the ip address of the phone. looks like it is disabled by default. how can I enable it?

Sounds like the phone came loaded with 3PCC/MPP firmware.
So you'll now need to find the 3PCC/MPP firmware and then enable DHCP Option 150.

you said it is loaded with 3PCC/MPP firmware, so what do you mean I need to find 3PCC/MPP firmware then if it already has that firmware?

any idea about the web access?

Web interface won't get activated unless the DHCP Option 150 is enabled.

I have setup tftp and dhcp option 150.

looks like it is able to connect the tftp server

but it still says registration in progress.

when I look at the status message: it says:

no trust link installed ,

File not found sipphonbename.xml and

XMLDefault.cnf.xml.xml (TFTP)

Progress (in a sort of way).

Looks like Cisco has changed the way 3PCC behaves again.

XMLDefault.cnf.xml was an old, old method.  Google this and you'll be able to find various examples how to make one.

NOTE:  Are you sure it is looking for a filename called "XMLDefault.cnf.xml.xml" (with the file extension gets repeated)?

Filename "sipphonbename.xml" is the first I've seen this behaviour.

the xml file name is correct. I just did not provide the right name in my previous post.

I found the file here:

https://www.ukvoipforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1113

can you please confirm if this is the right one?

Yes, that same of the file will do.

so why it is not doing anything, it should say something about upgrade on screen right?

You need to do a factory-reset for the phone to start downloading everything again, including the new file you've created. It's a "Cisco" thing.
In the past, old firmware will hit the TFTP server very often. New firmware doesn't do this anymore.

Another thing, you may need to create TWO (2) XMLDefault.cnf.xml files.  One has the filename of "XMLDefault.cnf.xml" and the other has the filename of "XMLDefault.cnf.xml.xml".

Pay attention to which one gets downloaded by the phone.  If it's the one with two "xml", then it's clear cut it's a bug.

actually is not two files only one xml file.

before setting up this upgrade it said the last update of phone was for last year and now it says for today date.

but why it cannot load anything on screen. still says it is registering....

why I cannot browse the phone with IP address with a browser?

I do not have call manager server. and I want to setup phones standalone

I am not sure what is happening with the direction of the 3PCC/MPP firmware. Just recently, Cisco has changed direction and it is now not possible/not supported to convert from 3PCC/MPP to Enterprise.
The fact that it's now looking for "sipphonbename.xml" makes it weird because this is the first time I've heard a behaviour like this.
(I have helped several people enable phones with Enterprise firmware register to non-Cisco call manager.)
What firmware is the phone loaded now?

Can you have a look at THIS.

See if you can make configuration changes by logging into the phone's web page:

Access the Phone Web Page

Access the phone web page from a web browser on a computer that can reach the phone on the subnetwork.

If your service provider has disabled access to the configuration utility, contact the service provider before proceeding.

Procedure

Step 1

Ensure that the computer can communicate with the phone. No VPN in use.

Step 2

Start a web browser.

Step 3

Enter the IP address of the phone in your web browser address bar.

  • User Access: http://<ip address>/user
  • Admin Access: http://<ip address>/admin/advanced
  • Admin Access: http://<ip address>, click Admin Login and click advanced

For example, http://10.64.84.147/admin
